March 21, 2011 Real Estate, Restaurant/Bar News, Shopping
It’s time once again to take stock of what’s in the works. I figured I’d tackle it geographically, starting with Franklin Street and up. If I missed anything—or if you have more info on any of these—please email tribecacitizen@gmail.com. (Part 2, on southern Tribeca, is coming soon.) Also, I still have a couple of calls out, so you may want to check back for updates.

ZINC BUILDING
Location: 475 Greenwich (at Watts).
What we know: The New York Times reported that a “high-end motorcycle club” was coming to one of the two commercial spaces in the Zinc Building (which fronts Canal, Greenwich, and Watts). Well, I have it on good authority that that deal feel through—perhaps in part because the residents didn’t love the idea of potential noise and fumes—and that a wine store may be in the works for the Greenwich/Canal space.

GROWN & SEWN
Location: 116 Franklin (bet. W. Broadway and Church).
What we know: The khakis-and-more store is leaving its current location, on Duane, for the old Color Me Mine space. It should open by next weekend.
•••••••••••••••••••••
AGATHA RUIZ DE LA PRADA
Location: 466 Greenwich (at Watts).
What we know: “We are almost done!” emailed ARDLP’s Linda Brun about the boutique designed by Karim Rashid. “Don’t have a date yet but [the opening] will be in April or May at the latest.”
•••••••••••••••••••••
XOOS FRENCH SHIRTS
Location: 7 Lispenard (bet. W. Broadway and Church).
What we know: “An upscale French shirt seller has chosen Tribeca for its first U.S. store,” reported Crain’s in early March. “Xoos French Shirts, which already has shops in Paris and Montreal, recently signed a 10-year lease for 1,000 square feet at 7 Lispenard St.” It could open as soon as the next day or two. UPDATE 3/23: Xoos will open on Thursday, Mar. 24.

JOHNNY’S CUTS
Location: 11 Lispenard (bet. W. Broadway and Church).
What we know: Gabe, who owns the Tribeca Barber Shop on Beach (the one you enter via the affiliated Ralph’s Shoe Repair next door), has leased 11 Lispenard (no clue what it used to be). It will become Johnny’s Cuts, and it will offer haircuts for “fathers and kids.” Gabe said it’ll open in a month or two. I learned about all this from real estate broker Cheryl Cohen of Trend Setter Realty, who set up the deal (cherylcomre@aol.com).

TRIBECA TWELVE
Location: 283 W. Broadway (bet. Canal and Lispenard).
What we know: The halfway house for college students recovering from addiction—a partnership between Hazelden and Columbia University—is set to open this summer. “Tribeca Twelve will serve students ages 18 to 29 who are either attending college or are preparing to return,” reported DNAinfo this month. “The male and female residents will live in furnished apartments for six to 12 months and will receive outpatient treatment during their stay.” It won’t just be for Columbia students. In February, DNAinfo reported that “On the first floor of the building, Hazelden will run a small outpatient clinic, which will also host AA meetings and community gatherings.” Here’s the Tribeca Twelve brochure.

LOLË
Location: 408 Greenwich St. (entrance on Hubert, between Greenwich and Washington).
What we know: In December, Crain’s reported that “Lolë, a Canadian company selling everything from bikinis to women’s puffer coats, recently signed a three-year lease for 1,600 square feet at 32 Hubert St. [sic], at the corner of Greenwich Street in Tribeca. […] This will be Lolë’s first freestanding store in the U.S., though the retailer already sells at ski and sports shops around the country. The article said the store would be open by the end of February, but of course nothing ever opens on schedule. It does appear to be getting close, with fixtures being installed daily. UPDATE 3/23: Lolë will open in “a month or so,” according to a rep.

TRIBECA CANVAS
Location: 313 Church (bet. Lispenard and Walker).
What we know: In September 2009, Masaharu Morimoto presented the CB1 Tribeca committee with a sample menu that included “fish and chips, homemade bagels, and fried bananas,” reported the Tribeca Trib, as well as “East Asian standards like hayashi rice, bibimbop, and steamed dumplings.” This past January, Morimoto told BlackBook that the restaurant would have “no Japanese, no sashimi, no sushi,” that it would close at 4 a.m., and that he didn’t know when it would open. I just spoke with a rep, who said, “Sometime this summer.”
•••••••••••••••••••••
NUTOPIA
Location: 1 White St. (a.k.a. 229 W. Broadway).
What we know: “[Jesse] Eidsness, a former manager at the Sympathy for the Kettle tea shop in the East Village, leased the four-story building at 1 White Street in July, a month after it was sold by its long-time owners for $3.25 million to an undisclosed buyer, who Eidsness said is an investor in her restaurant,” reported the Tribeca Trib in October 2010. “She’s taken up residence in the two-story townhouse on the upper floors, and said she plans to open a fusion eatery on the bottom two. ‘It’s inspired by little pieces of a whole range of foods,’ Eidsness said, adding that she hopes to open the restaurant by next summer. ‘We’re still in development on a lot of the details.’” Now that Columbine has moved next door, work can presumably get started.
•••••••••••••••••••••
WALKER’S PIZZERIA
Location: 18 N. Moore (which fronts Varick).
What we know: In February 2010, Walker’s went before the CB1 Tribeca committee to secure a liquor license for the new space, which will add 34 seats—including a six-seat bar—and a brick oven for pizzas. It’ll all be called Walker’s. It’s been in the works for so long that no one seems to know when it might actually open.
•••••••••••••••••••••
PATRON OF THE NEW
Location: 149–151 Franklin (between Varick and Hudson).
What we know: From November 2010: “Al Abayan, formerly of Number (N)ine on Washington, […] just emailed, explaining that after Number (N)ine stopped producing globally, he continued to consult with the designer, Takahiro Miyashita. ‘But the new project on Franklin Street is new venture for myself and partners. It will be a lifestyle store of women’s, men’s, and interior items all curated by myself (and it will carry Takahiro’s newly launched line called The Soloist). We plan to open early 2011.’” The store will be called Patron of the New, or the New for short. No word on whether it’s still on schedule.
•••••••••••••••••••••
THEATER BAR
Location: 114 Franklin (between W. Broadway and Church).
What we know: Albert Trummer’s bar—which has been hosting private parties for months—is scheduled to open around April 1. The bartenders evidently do tricks.
•••••••••••••••••••••
THE NEW BUILDS
In case you were wondering, neither 471 Washington (at Canal) nor 1 N. Moore (at W. Broadway, above) will have commercial space.
