Seen & Heard: Church Street Gentrification

149 Church••• After posting yesterday that Ruben’s Empanadas on Church had closed, I heard that the building (149 Church) is being sold and all those tenants are on the way out, with an eye toward bringing in more upscale ones.

••• Café Boca Ciega, in the old JEM Café space on Broadway, has soft-opened; official opening tomorrow, when I’ll do a full post about it.

••• The Live Well Company says it’ll open its new boutique gym (256 West St., between Laight and Vestry) next week.

••• Opening April 2 at Soho Photo: “previously unpublished work from the Josephine Herrick Project’s path-breaking experiment using the art of photography to help World War II veteran heal from their wounds, physical and psychological.”

••• China Blue is now offering delivery, if this Seamless page is any indication.

••• I posted the answer to last week’s stumper of a Where in Tribeca…? (the one with the taxi sign).

••• Something appears to be happening in the old Siring Asian Grill space at 325 Broadway….

••• Dylan Prime is now open for lunch. Here’s the menu; below, the brisket burger.

  1. any way to find out if they are demolishing the building, or remodeling it?

  2. This is Anne Marie from The Live Well Company Gym. Thanks for the mention Erik! So excited to say we will be doing a soft opening by end of next week (3/7-ish)! Happy to answer any questions, any time!

    • Hello Live Well!
So happy to see you are almost up and running. I was deeply saddened to see the state of the block after the hurricane. Will come by and say hello soon! Congratulations on the expansion!

  3. Ordered from China Blue last week. Delivery was quick and the food was great. Glad they’re in the neighborhood!

  4. if that’s the block between Warren and Chambers…I have mixed feelings. I like the Indian place and the watch place. The watch guy seems to take care of the street in front, which is tough because of the construction webbing. the other day they were touching up some concrete. indian place always smells great. very friendly. it’s not as nice as some other parts but frankly the other parts are so homogeneous and predictable-in-their-unpredictableness that it’s hard to know what to hope for.
