New Kid on the Block: Exceed Physical Culture

Exceed Physical Culture, which just opened a three-level space on Reade, is all about functional fitness, or training in a way that replicates real-word situations. That means only a couple of cardio machines and a lot of analog equipment—monkey bars, jump ropes, chains, kettle bells, boxing gloves, TRX straps, even a huge tractor tire…. “You can do it in any space,” says founder Catherine Goodwin. “And it’s for everyone. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, we’re here to help grow health.”

(You can even bring your own trainer.) “The trainers here are independent,” says Goodwin. “They essentially rent the space from us. And because they’re all athletes, they bring a real team energy to classes.”

The facility is around 6,000 square feet, much bigger than the original Exceed on the Upper East Side or the outpost in East Hampton. The ground floor contains a front desk with an array of branded clothing for sale, a couple of rowing machines for warming up, lockers, and the main studio space for classes. The finishing touches are still being put on the studio, so classes are currently being held one level down, on what will be the training floor, where there are also spacious locker rooms, with showers, for men and women. (Goodwin says the client ratio is about 50/50.) The floor below that has even more training gear, including the aforementioned tire.

Class size is no more than 20, and rates start at $32 and go down if you buy a package. (There are student and teacher discounts.) And in June, your first class is on the house.

Exceed Physical Culture is at 97 Reade (between W. Broadway and Church), 212-406-3600; exceedphysicalculture.com.
