Seen & Heard: Is Pookie & Sebastian Opening Here?

••• I haven’t been able to substantiate this, but Jodi commented that women’s fashion brand Pookie & Sebastian is opening a store in the former Adeline Adeline space at 147 Reade. The P&S site doesn’t have an about page or store locator, but Yelp says there are shops on the Upper East Side and in Midtown East and Murray Hill.

Pookie and Sebastian••• D. emailed about the woman who has been living on Murray between Greenwich and West Street.

Her name is Yvonne. She doesn’t have proper clothing for this kind of cold. I gave her a blanket and took her a bundle of cardboard (she asked if I had any) but she wouldn’t accept clothing that wasn’t brown. I have no brown clothes. (I offered her a coat, sweater, socks, etc.) I think she is wearing brown clothes for religious reasons but I am not sure. She is kind and lucid and I haven’t been able to get her out of my head. I really wish there was some way this community could help her but I have no experience with this. At the least, I would hope to find some warm brown garments that she would agree to wear. Ideally, I would love to find a safe shelter where she could sleep out of the cold although I don’t know that she would agree to do it. If you are able to post anything about this on Tribeca Citizen, I would appreciate it.

This is way out of my wheelhouse, but I suggested calling the New York City Rescue Mission on Lafayette. I don’t know if she’d go but they might know how to talk to her. (D. said they were a bit overwhelmed with this cold, and they said to try calling 911. D. also called 311, which directed the call to the Department of Homeless Services.)  Also, somewhat relatedly, the NYPD 1st Precinct is collecting coats for donation.

••• Last night, 1 World Trade Center was lighting up on some middle floor—the light went from purple to blue and back again. It reminded me of the TV being installed of the window of the new nail salon on Chambers. Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.

••• Also last night, I went to the Harrison for dinner. (I’ll miss sitting at that bar!) I ordered the carrot appetizer, which is $14. If I had been at a shared small plates restaurant (Little Park, Telepan Local, et al), I probably would’ve thought it expensive, because I wouldn’t have had more than a few pieces of carrot. But since I had the whole thing—it wasn’t that big, but it was enough carrots for one night—I didn’t mind the price. And I think that gets to the root, so to speak, of the small-plates problem.

••• The storefront at the 257 Church (southeast corner of Leonard Franklin), where James Perse is opening a store, is looking good.

James Perse••• In case you missed this update: A reader has it on good authority that Bikram Yoga NYC pulled out of the space at 158 Duane. Anyone know if they’ve found somewhere else in the area? UPDATE: Bikram Yoga NYC co-owner Jen Lobo Plamondon says the 158 Duane plans are still on! “We have had to re-route some mechanical plans which has set us back many months but there has certainly not been any change in our lease. We had high hopes of opening by January but it is probably looking like Spring at this point.”

••• The Who’s Onboard at the World Trade Center Mall post has been updated to reflect all the recent news.

••• Press release: “The next Pen Parentis Literary Salon is Tuesday, December 9, at the Hotel Andaz at 75 Wall Street. The night kicks off at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free. RSVP is recommended, but not required. The December salon is a mingling soirée with wine and appetizers compliments of the Hotel Andaz Wall Street, featuring live music by jazz guitarist Wilson Montuori and stories from Marie Myung-Ok Lee, author of the novel Somebody’s Daughter; Yona Zeldis McDonough, author of the novel You Were Meant For Me; Bushra Rehman, author of the novel Corona and co-editor of the anthology Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today’s Feminism; and young adult novelist Raina Wallens.”

••• A couple of people have asked about the oculus and Oculus. The Fulton Center has an oculus (“a circular opening in the center of a dome or in a wall“) but when people talk about the Oculus—in the context oft he World Trade Center—they mean the Calatrava armadillo. No retail has been announced for the Fulton Center yet.

  1. 257 is actually corner of Franklin, not Leonard.

  2. If Yvonne wants brown, and someone can give her warm brown things, that’s probably all that can be done. You can buy her something brown from Goodwill, the Salvation Army, etc.

As far as getting her into a shelter, don’t hope for too much. There is a sizable homeless population that refuses shelter, for reasons comprehensible and not.
When it gets really cold, there are efforts to bring this population inside.

Once a year, there is an effort to count them, so the City has a more accurate sense of how large this population is.

While homeless, the non-shelter based single adult homeless are a very different population from those in shelters.

  3. Perhaps some people could donate any brown clothes and or some money and to A’s point buy some brown clothes for her at a secondhand store? I am happy to go through my closet, I don’t think I have anything brown that would be warm enough. Her approximate size (ie: Medium/Large or XL) would be helpful as well…Also is she always there? I would just hate to go buy these things on a special trip if perhaps she is not, but I would be very interested in helping…

  4. I guess beggars really can be choosers

  5. I passed her on a particularly cold day and double backed to bring her store bought hot vegetarian lentil soup. She politely declined saying she doesn’t eat soup. Unfortunately I was running late for an appointment so I wasn’t able to find out what she does eat.

  6. I noticed this week, that Yvonne’s stuff is still on Murray Street, but she is not there any more. Does anyone know if she okay?
