Seen & Heard: Zara Is Open

Visitors are immersed in a glowing canopy of 650 custom lanterns embedded with LEDs, each capable of changing color and intensity.”

••• Antiqueria Tribeca on Duane is having its first warehouse sale in seven years. (It’s Thursday through Sunday.) I remember the first one from around when I first started this site! It was impressive.

••• Café Noir’s shuttering appears to have been a surprise to the landlord, too. UPDATE: HH says in the comments that Clarkson has closed, too. Let’s hope Cercle Rouge is OK.

Cafe Noir••• Friends of Washington Market Park uses It’s My Park Day (Nov. 14) “to teach children a bit about gardening, and enlist their help in planting thousands of bulbs in the fall and annuals in the spring. For children who like to get their hands dirty, this is the event for them… Our Park Gardener Richie will instruct children and adults on how to properly plant bulbs, flowers, and work the soil depending on what is needed within the park. We will have children’s gardening gloves and trowels, but if you have your own please bring them along.” It’s 11 a.m. to noon.

••• Laughing Man‘s parklet has been dismantled for the season. There was some consternation about it before fit was built; how do we feel about it now that we saw it in action?

  1. The Laughing Man parklet is fantastic. It should be replicated throughout the neighborhood (and city).

  2. Hmmm… Interesting Cafe Noir is shutting down. The owner is selling his property in LES according to Bowery Boogie.

    • things must be going really bad for the owner. his other restaurant in hudson square, clarkson, also recently closed down. let’s hope cercle rouge stays open!

  3. Oh great. Another Zara? Quality has nose dived in recent years. Every time I go there I feel like I’ve been ripped off. Never again.

    • To Rebecca S,

What? Ripped off? Its the most forward fashion and quality price point you can find…where do you go that you’re not “ripped off” ?

  4. I liked the benches outside Laughing man I thought they were a nice feature in an otherwise crowded and car-dominated city. Bring them back next year.

  5. Walked my dog by the parklet many times a day as we live on the block. It was so lovely to see people having coffee and engaged in conversation – a great addition to the block and the neighborhood. Why are people so negative?

  6. I guess I misspelled parklette.

  7. I like the fact that it’s seasonal, blossoming in the Spring and Summer and fading with the chill of Fall and Winter. Not sure we need more of them, however, as we’ve got bike racks taking up space while small businesses and residents still need parking spaces.

  8. The lights in the Wintergarden have been turned on. I know they don’t officially open until 12/2, but from what I can see they’re very disappointing. They look plastic and have cheesy colors. The old ones were so elegant:

    • Agree. The structure that they hang from is heavy and awkward; not at all like what’s shown in the illustration. The lights are cold and too bright. Looks cheap.
