Seen & Heard: That Chinese Restaurant Isn’t Really New

••• “Tokyo Bay recently renovated the place and it’s awesome!” reports T. “We often sit at the sushi bar and Billy (the sushi chef) gives us the rundown on what came from Japan that day (usually on the specials board too). Just wanted to email because Takahachi (which is also great) often has a huge wait and I don’t think enough people know about Tokyo Bay, just down the block.”

••• Sandy had some disappointing news about Ningbo Cafe, the “new” Chinese restaurant in Battery Park City: “The waiter told us it was the same owner, staff, etc., from Liberty View and then the Malaysian-named restaurant. They are just back to a predominantly Chinese menu again.”

••• Amada sent out an email saying its café, Amadita, is now open from “7:30 a.m. and serves coffee, pastries and a selection of grab and go lunch items, such as empanadas and bocadillos.”

••• From Tribeca CSA: “We still have shares available for 2016. Weekly distribution run by members for twenty-two weeks of minimally treated vegetables.  In-season fruit shares also available.  Pick-up is on Tuesdays 3-6 p.m., from June to October. Washington Market Park (Reade & Greenwich).”

••• A show of Donna Ferrato’s Tribeca photos opens May 12 at the Leica store in Soho.

••• Came across the new Hercules Art/Studio Program on Twitter (and then Facebook): It “offers emerging artists studio space as well as an exhibition venue and grounds for public programming in Lower Manhattan.” It’s on the third floor of 25 Park Place.

  1. There is also a farm share through Grow NYC. It’s $12 per week for fruits and veggies. Pick up location is in DCAS building (winter months it’s on 9th floor, summer months it’s in the lobby). You just place your order the week before and pick up the following week. You can go week by week basis. No long term commitment required.

  2. Definitely second the Tokyo Bay shout out. It is so under the radar and the fish is super fresh. Sent a friend there for dinner the other night and he came back and thanked me because he enjoyed it so much. With all the talk about support local and small this one is a no brainer. Billy (the owner) is super nice and knows his craft.

    • Oh good. I gave up on them about 5 years ago for reasons I now can’t remember. Will give them another go…

      • quality had slipped at tokyo bay while billy was in asia for a few years but since he’s returned, things have steadily improved. nice job on the renovation. this is my go to place for dependable sushi.

  3. Liberty view was actually one of my favorite places so I’m glad to hear that it is basically back.
