Landmarc Has Closed

When Landmarc announced reduced hours for summer, it gave concern that the restaurant was on its last legs—and now the New York Times reports that it has closed, and will be used for private events. It opened 13 years ago. When I regularly ate meat, I loved the hanger steak with shallot bordelaise, and of course the caramels….

UPDATE: “It has been an honor to serve the Tribeca neighborhood for so many years,” wrote chef/owner Marc Murphy on Instagram. “My kids grew up eating at Landmarc, and it was the very first restaurant we opened.”

UPDATE #2: On Facebook, Troy wondered whether the building—and 177 W. Broadway to the south—were doomed. I had thought 177 was landmarked, but I was wrong. From Daytonian in Manhattan: “One of the last surviving structures from the 1802-1805 period in Tribeca, No. 177 West Broadway was considered for landmark designation on June 26, 2012. The building’s owner, Shiloh Company LLC, sent its attorney to oppose the designation. Valerie Campbell argued that the structure was heavily altered and did not consider the 110-year old third floor addition historic. The Landmarks Preservation Commission agreed. Chairman Robert B. Tierney said that the alterations ‘tipped it away from designation.'” Still, Murphy—who I believe owns 179—may have sold air rights to New York Law School, which could limit the development appeal.

  1. Such sad news. They were so important to the neighborhood when we first moved here in ’02.
    Such a nice friendly team.
So sorry to hear this news.
Hope their Time Warner location is still ongoing

  2. They might have been good when they first opened but for as long as I can remember, I was disappointed with their food every single time I’d gone.

  3. Sorry to here:-( Have enjoyed many meals here.

  5. terrifying that they’d even consider tearing down a building from 1805…at long last, have they no decency?

  6. Sad to see it go. It had fallen off in quality a bit over the past few years, but it was still quite good and a nice place to have in the neighborhood.
