Seen & Heard: What’s Next for the Burned Building on Church

•••”For what it’s worth,” emailed Bob about 111 Church, ravaged by fire back in September. “I saw several of the previous merchants at the building cleaning out their stores on Saturday—first activity I’ve seen there in a long time. I had a brief conversation with one of them, and he told me that they’ve been told to clear out their stuff as the landlord expects to begin renovations on the commercial space soon. I asked him if he planned to return, and he said he didn’t think so as the landlord had indicated there would likely be a significant increase in rent. He said he paid $5K per month and expected it to go to $15K or so. As with all this stuff, I take it with a grain of salt, but probably some truth in this, if only because it indicates renovations are to begin soon.”

••• The next Tribeca Meet & Greet, organized by the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center,is this Thursday, February 22, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio (291 Broadway, ninth floor). Both local businesses and civilians are welcome.

••• From the looks of the menu posted outside, Eric Korsh is already working at Racines (though he wasn’t supposed to start till next month). I’m pleased to see the salad, which is like one that used to be on the menu at North End Grill.

••• After I posted about how the agenda for Thursday night’s meeting of the CB1 Quality of Life Committee now included “Walker Street ongoing issues,” B. emailed this: “If I lived further east along Walker Street than I do, I’d say that the ‘Walker street issues’ are due to the extremely loud, huge generator-like unit that seems to be running non-stop. It’s in front of the hotel that’s being developed on the southeast corner of Broadway and Walker. Every time I walk by it I can’t imagine how the neighbors are coping.”

••• Two more TV shoots: “Iron Fist” (a.k.a. Kick 2) in the Church/Walker area on Wednesday and Thursday, and “Power” at W. Broadway/White on Friday. We’ve been averaging three to four a week for a while now, in case the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment tries to claim there aren’t that many around here.

    Unless the store tenant in question had a limited time left on his or her lease, this makes no sense. A lease doesn’t get cancelled because of fire damage. The tenant should give notice, vacate temporarily, and allow the space to be repaired. It sounds like the landlord is taking advantage of a calamity, which may be perhaps why supervision was lax over the cleaning of the flammable, grease-laden commercial cooking exhaust of the Asian restaurant mid block.

  2. Sounds to me like what they use to do in the south bronx in the 70’s and 80’s burn down buildings to vacate so they can increase rent. Scams

  3. Regarding 111 Church, before the holidays I spoke with someone who had office space on the upper floors. He said they were given vacate orders, and he had already cleaned his stuff out. He told me the damage was extensive, and that it was not clear if the building would be knocked down.

    • Has the building owner done any of the work (filed cost $100,000) they got permits for in October?

  4. So true Sandra. The former South Bronx way of getting
    pesky old Time commercial tenants out.
    Found myself in Tents & Trails the day after the fire and
    they didn’t even seem slightly concerned. I know there
    is a building between them and the corner but it just seemed odd at the time.
    And now their building is up for sale….
