Loft Peeping: Art Collectors at 100 Barclay

Architectural Digest’s sub-brand Clever (“a new site all about design advice for real life,” versus the fantasyland of AD proper, I guess) featured an apartment at 100 Barclay that appears to be owned by two men, executives at Ferragamo Americas and PayPal. The apartment was originally three bedrooms, but they tore down part of one bedroom wall to make a den. As lovely as the place is, there were really only two other items of note in the text:

••• “We don’t like seeing a TV anywhere other than the bedroom—I feel like it ruins the vibe of the room,” said one of the owners, explaining why the TV is hidden in a cabinet. Hear, hear! When I told our contractor that we wanted a built-in to be able to hold a TV, he was so baffled that he pointed out we’d have to open the door every time we wanted to watch it.

••• Their art collection is awesome, with works by Ruth Asawa, Alex Katz, Peter Hujar, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, Robert Mapplethorpe, Garry Winogrand, Erwin Wurm, Mark Morrisroe, Yoshitomo Nara, PaJaMa, Tom of Finland, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Kathryn Spence, Alma Allen, Anne Rothenstein, Henry Villierme, Brent Wadden, Chantal Joffe, John Dickinson, Mark Ryden, George Condo, Derek Ridgers, David Armstrong, and David Ireland. (A personal favorite: David Gilhooley’s hamburger sculpture on the kitchen counter.) The Ferragamo CEO likes to rearrange the collection every now and then: “I rarely have time to dedicate to it, but when I do it’s very therapeutic.”
