Ato Has Closed

C. sends word that Ato restaurant at 28 Grand has closed. “Unfortunately, Ato is now closed due to unforeseen internal circumstances, and at this moment, we are not sure when the reopen date will be,” states the notice on the website. The sign in the window, meanwhile, says that Takeshi Sushi will be opening there early next year. Takeshi’s Instagram bio says it’ll be an “omakase experience.” I’m trying to find out whether Ato and Takeshi are related. UPDATE 10/16: They’re not. “We are a group of young entrepreneurs new to the restaurant industry,” said one of the folks involved in Takeshi. And they should be ready to open in a month or so.

Ato opened in early 2017, and while New York magazine critic Adam Platt and I liked it—he gave it three stars, calling it “a delicious surprise”—the restaurant otherwise never got the attention it deserved. A spinoff tea room opened on Wooster last May; I’ll swing by at some point and see if it’s still there.
