Housing Works Is Closing Its Tribeca Store

Thanks to John for the heads-up that Housing Works is closing its store at 119 Chambers. The last day is November 25, but donations will only be accepted until November 18. (If I remember, I’ll call and ask whether that means through November 17 or 18. Either way, time for a purge!) The store opened on Chambers in the summer of 2009, after a short stint at 72 Warren.

P.S. Still kicking myself for not buying this lamp a few weeks ago.

  1. Another loss for the area. I remember when it was Ruby’s used books and magazine shop. Sigh.

  2. that lamp is awesome

  3. Why?!!!! Another example of landlord greed? Or what? This is a huge loss to the neighborhood.

    • Premises was on the market for some time and listed as “occupancy: arranged”, so it was probably not yet an expiring lease. It has been re-rented apparently.

      Per Loopnet ad:

      “Date Created 06/19/2017
      ID#: 7727032
      Last Updated: 09/27/2018
      Description
Size: Ground Floor 1621 SF + 1592 SF on the lower level
      Frontage: 15′ on Chambers Street
      Occupancy: Arranged
      Use: All Considered”

      Per Agorafy:

      asking rent
      “$23,640 per month
      $175 per sqft”

      Per listing at https://hudsonre.com/property/119-chambers-street/

      “Leased”

  4. So now where can we go in the neighborhood to drop off donations? Is there any other option/equivalent?

  5. There isn’t another local drop-off for chattels in general, but clothing will continue to be able to be donated every Saturday and Weds morning at the GrowNYC booth at the Greenwich Street farmer’s market.

  6. There is also a drop bin at the Downtown Community Center down by the pool.

  7. I walked up and down Chambers Street yesterday with two shopping bags of books and clothing. Short notice for the closing. I ended up leaving the two bags with trash at the curb. More notice would have been helpful. Never heard of the “Downtown Community Center” and I have lived downtown for more than 20 years.

  8. Anyone know where to donate books? The Library on Murray is under renovation. Thanks.

  9. Housing Works Bookstore Cafe up in SoHo (Crosby Street) takes book donations.

  10. St Margrets Council thrift shop of Fulton is a GREAT! Place to bring donations
