Seen & Heard: Pier 25 playground back online

I may be the last to know, but the Pier 25 playground opened last month with a new squishy surface. Hardy children will have the place to themselves in this weather. The playground reno was funded by Councilmember Margaret Chin, Borough President Gale Brewer and the state of New York for about $500,000. The park is also refurbishing the playground at Pier 51 at Jane Street (which should open this summer). In both cases, contractors improved drainage and added sealants for weather.

SOUNDS OF THE RIVER
The Downtown Alliance has responded to the news of all the new ferry routes with a five-song Spotify playlist with songs about NYC waterways titled “Sounds of the River.” It includes Carly Simon (for a trip down memory lane, watch this video), They Might Be Giants, Louis Armstrong, The Weavers and Harry Nilsson. This seems like a shallow list. Anyone have any ideas to add?

SEEING THE SKY
F. writes to say that most of the shed that has for years covered Thames Street between the Trinity building and the US Realty building has been removed, and sends these gorgeous shots to prove it.

  1. “The partnership behind the 96-key luxury hotel development at 456 Greenwich Street filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday, claiming that it was necessary to protect its investment after its landlord made it impossible to secure financing for the project.

” ‘The partnership has been in discussions with various lenders to complete the project financing, but the landlord’s President, Vincent J. Ponte, has refused to approve various standard loan and financing terms which are common in the market that have been presented to him,’ said Ivaylo Ninov of Mactaggart Family & Partners, speaking as principal of the general partner in a statement. ‘The partnership is confident that financing will be obtained through the bankruptcy process to complete the project.'”
