New Kid on the Block!!! Homemade by Miriam

What started out as a bar concept from the owners of 1803 has morphed into a takeout-only restaurant serving Israeli specials from Miriam, a Park Slope favorite, for the former Just Baked! space on West Broadway and Chambers.

Rafi Hasid opened Miriam in 2005, and it’s been a top spot with locals, food bloggers and BK outsiders ever since (I am a big fan of their shakshuka, which I would eat at any time of day, not just for brunch.) (For further reading, there’s a fun essay-slash-ode-to-Nora-Ephron on the restaurant being the perfect place to indulge in heartbreak in Eater.)

The food will be prepared at Miriam in Brooklyn and brought over here for pickup and delivery (as I recall the space is not equipped for a full kitchen). The menu is fresh and healthy, with dishes like lamb burgers in pita, chicken shawarma, falafel, vegetarian couscous. Order on their site here. Hours will be 11:30 to 8:30 to start, with brunch served Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 to 4p. I’ll get pics of the food once they are really up and running.

Bonus: there’s a chance they will be able to use the odd little parking lot on Warren for outdoor dining. (Also, kudos to the team for not tearing the place up and creating garbage for no reason. The interior is very cute and in great shape. The only significant change they are making is replacing the front window so it can open.)

When Hasid and his partners first proposed a tavern for the space, there was a lot of pushback from one upstairs neighbor in particular who said the noise from the compressor at Baked! sounded like a tractor trailer in his apartment. CB1’s Licensing Committee asked them to come back to the next meeting, and they instead pivoted with this concept. The group opened 1803 at the corner of Church and Reade in 2017 as an ode to New Orleans, a favorite city among them.

Hasid graduated from the French Culinary Institute in 2001, and one of his first jobs here was as a chef at Yamamoto’s — he told me on the street yesterday that he learned to make sushi while there, but he will leave that to the experts. When I walked by, he had just ordered his staff lunch from Jr. Sushi nextdoor.

  1. The menu looks delicious! This will be a great addition to the neighborhood. Can’t wait to try it. Bold move opening during the pandemic, I hope they do well.
Are you referring to the driveway on Warren St. that attaches to the back of the building? That would be a good use of the space.

  2. Yes glad this is a headline. I walked by yesterday and was excited to see what was happening. We need a win

  3. Looks delicious! Will definitely order. Welcome and we’re rooting for you!

  4. Hi, I think you meant Just Baked! on West Broadway and Chambers? Baked was another (and better) bakery on Church St.

    I’m excited to try Miriam!

  5. Does anyone know what their delivery range is?
