Racines will reinvent itself in the fall

Racines NY will end its seven-year run this week with the departure of chef Diego Moya, who is leaving to spend more time with his young family.

But it’s not over for us or for the braintrust behind what has become a destination restaurant in the neighborhood: Partners David Lillie and Pascaline Lepeltier (the restaurant’s sommelier) along with general manager Jared David will reimagine the space as an entirely new restaurant, scheduled to open at the end of the year.

You can get your licks in these next two weeks: they are staying open till 10 to accommodate fans and Moya will return from parental leave for the last week. The last service will be Friday, July 30.

Moya joined the restaurant two years ago, coming from Hemlock to be the fourth chef since the restaurant opened in 2014, and rather than shift the kitchen again, the partners decided to close and regroup. “We have concluded that the idea of a fifth culinary team for ‘Racines NY’ specifically is exhausting, both for us and for our guests, many of whom have remained loyal since the very beginning; that the idea of Racines NY has simply run its course; and that it should therefore come to an end, aptly, at what we believe to be its prime.”

Considering that this past year and a half in the restaurant industry has just sucked, it is a relief to hear that they are still at it and still willing to give it another go here in Tribeca, especially on that stretch of Chambers. And it’s exciting to imagine what they will come up with. My guess it will include at least a few of those 2800 bottles in the cellar.

  1. Sounds like a great plan for them. Excited to see what the future brings.

On an unrelated note, the new hotel at 456 Greenwich has removed construction netting and revealed the Greenwich St-facing facade. It’s a stunning addition to that area—the brickwork came out beautifully.

  2. Update in today’s NYTimes – we have until the end of the month to snag a final meal – I plan to!

“After seven years as a locus of interesting wines and food, this spinoff of a Parisian restaurant group will say goodbye after service on July 30. The present executive chef, Diego Moya, has been on parental leave and feels he now must step away permanently. He is returning to the kitchen briefly from next week until the closing. The owners, David Lille and Pascaline Lepeltier, and the manager Jared David, do not plan to replace Mr. Moya — the restaurant has had several executive chefs over the years — but will develop a new concept and reopen by the end of the year.” You can read more on their website https://racinesny.com
