Sweetgreen on Hubert will close this weekend

E. just sent a note: the Sweetgreen on Greenwich and Hubert will close this Saturday, Feb. 18. “Bummer!” said E., and I agree. Thank goodness for Benvenuto, which has weathered all these storms — literal and otherwise — for decades. (I’ll check, but I think it is more than 40 years…)

This location — the first in the neighborhood and the second in the city — opened in 2014; the chain was founded in DC in 2007. By 2018 the fast-casualization of Greenwich Street seemed complete with the arrival of Wisefish Poké joining ‘Wichcraft and Dig Inn and Dr Smood was scheduled for the northwest corner that is now Blue Bottle coffee; the pandemic took them all out. Wisefish Poke and Dig Inn are now quite the opposite: L’Abeille and its soon-to-arrive sister sushi restaurant.

Sweetgreen corporate confirms that the location on Chambers and West Broadway is not closing, but a quick google shows the company had some struggles this past summer. CNBC reported that they were making corporate layoffs and reducing their office real estate footprint.

Still, I am surprised the folks at Citi couldn’t make it worth their while — I have seen lines out their door in recent months. Citi, of course, has its own restaurant inside and their employees are mostly hybrid…

There are another 36 restaurants in the city, including Chambers and Spring and Hudson, if you need a fix.
