Coffeeshop coming to 450 Washington at Desbrosses

Coffee Project New York, a local chain with seven locations in the city, has taken the former Fika space at 450 Washington — the newly re-developed Truffles Tribeca — on the corner of Desbrosses. This is a welcome sign for that strip of Washington, which has been pretty quiet. Thanks to N. for the photo and tip.

Big Gay Ice Cream has had the lease there at least since December and V. reported in late June that she spied two rainbow-colored benches still wrapped in plastic outside the store and workers inside. The Greek is on the other end at Watts.

The founders are Chi Sum Ngai and Kaleena Teoh, a married couple who quit their tech jobs and opened a coffee shop as a passion project in the East Village in 2015. They now roast their own beans, sell wholesale and offer classes on all things coffee. The company’s Long Island City location includes a training campus for coffee professionals and enthusiasts.

The menu includes sandwiches and pastries and all the milk options, including a Deconstructed Latte with oat milk. More TK when they open.

  1. Nice addition, but was really hoping for ice cream. Actual cups and glasses with ample outdoor seating would be solid.

    • I gather as you do that since there is only one space available this news means there is no Big Gay Ice cream shop coming anymore…

The Coffee Shop is a good addition though – We miss Fika…

      • Big Gay Ice Cream is in the middle.

        • Walked by yesterday and saw the door to the old Fika space open so I popped in. The fit out is almost entirely complete and it’s clearly Big Gay Ice Cream. The contractor confirmed that as well. They said they’re expecting to open fairly soon. No idea where Coffee Project will be located. Must be another retail space in 450, maybe closer to the WSH?
