In the News: Among the 100 best restaurants…

SOME OF THE 100 BEST RESTAURANTS
The Times’ Pete Wells made his now-annual list of the 100 best restaurants in the city and Tribeca makes the list with Eulalie, Frenchette, Shion 69 Leonard, and I will claim Houseman and Le Coucou, which are both just across Canal. And since I have yet to post about my fab visit to Eulalie, here’s what Wells said: “Chip Smith and Tina Vaughn are immune to trends. He cooks in the regional-American style that flourished at the end of the last century. Nobody’s nostalgic for it yet, but Mr. Smith can make you wonder why not; he cooks it sensitively, and with conviction. Meanwhile Ms. Vaughn runs the dining room with the authority and familiarity only a proprietor can command.”

WINE BAR AND SHOWROOM FROM ‘IN COMMON WITH’
Add this to the Tribeca Design District: The lighting and design company In Common With has opened an 8000-square-foot showroom on the second floor of 383 Broadway, just north of White, that will double as a party space. The Wallpaper story said it is called Quarters and will showcase collections by the company and others and will double as a “community gathering space.” “Inspired by Tribeca’s rich artistic history – and by the participatory spirit of 1960s ad hoc art spaces – Quarters shifts between the expected and the altogether disarming, a curated space and one that’s improvisational and alive,” the co-founders said.

A SAGA IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE
Eater reports that the executive chef at James Kent’s Saga Hospitality Group — Crown Shy, SAGA, Overstory — has been accused of copying a dish from the short-lived Mena at the Walker Hotel, for Season 21 of Bravo’s Top Chef. Danny Garcia has been accused by chef Victoria Blamey, his former boss at Mena, “of allegedly copying a recipe from her from when he worked for her. That very dish, or at least a variation of it, won him an elimination challenge on this season of Top Chef, which takes place in Wisconsin.”

TRIBECA GALLERIES HEAD TO THE COUNTRY
The Times reports that six galleries — including Bortolami, James Cohan, Anton Kern and Andrew Kreps — have bought an abandoned school on 22 acres in Claverack, NY, for a new kind of exhibition space that will be called the Campus. The first show is on June 29.

  1. Forgione not being on the Times 100 list is a shame. It remains the most underrated restaurant in the city, hands down.

  2. restaurants: i wonder what Pete Wells has against Raoul’s?

    • From the State Comptroller: The net number of restaurants and bars in the city increased by more than 7,000 from 2009 to 2019 to reach 23,650 establishments.

  3. Agree on Forgione. He can cook and food is excellent. I do find the noise to be loud, bouncing off brick. Hopefully Forge will have some sound mitigation in newly designed space.

I would strongly advocate for Chambers. Excellent food and beverage.

Pete’s 100 best are like any list – subjective. He’s only done 7 reviews this year in 5 months, and 30 last year so how he chooses 100 best is beyond me.
