Construction at PS 234 is wrapping up

I’m not sure I will recognize the corner of Warren and Greenwich once the scaffolding is down, but it looks like that will be the view within the next two months. (Thanks to E., T. and A. for the shots.)

Lisa commented last week that she spotted the scaffolding coming down — and when I went out that next morning I didn’t see a difference, but in fact the removal of the scaffold on the school itself is ongoing as of now and should be completed by mid-August, the press rep from the School Construction Authority said.

The sidewalk shed removal will start around mid-August and be completed by the end of August.

The Donna Dennis fence is being installed this week.

The interior work and painting is ongoing as well, and the full project is anticipated to be completed by the end of September.

Too exciting.

The work at the school has had a few false starts; it was first scheduled to begin in November 2022, and then really got going last March. The sidewalk shed along the Warren Street side of the building has been up by the SCA’s account since 2017, though it sure feels like longer.

  1. It’s INSANE how long that scaffolding was up. The City is among the worst offenders when it comes to erecting scaffolding and avoiding the actual repairs.

  2. this is fantastic news.. thanks for doing what you do.

  3. Fifth grade children who attended this elementary school when the scaffold was erected in 2017 have graduated high school, can vote for President this year and will be starting college in a month.

    • How and where do parents submit complaints about this so it has to be addressed? Should we be submitting to 311 daily?

  4. My son just graduated 5th grade at PS 234 and the scaffolding has been up since he started Kindergarten so his entire time at school! And for 5/6 years I never saw any work being done.

  5. I wrote a letter to TC three years ago after inquiries about the shed surrounding PS-234 to the school principal, the school engineer and subsequently to the Dept. of Education, none of which had a clue as to answering the question: “Why has this thing been up for FOUR years now and there is never anyone working on the site – ever!”
The south side of PS-34 has been an eyesore for the better part of a decade with the school offices, cafeteria and classrooms on that side of the building existing in a virtual “dark side of the moon.”
To those who might say, “why complain about it now?” The answer is simple: this condition of eternal eyesore and neglect exists all over Manhattan – including all of the buildings that we live in, which at one time or another will be subject to the facade inspection dictates of Local Law 11. I understand the need for safety precautions, but how about the need to inspect, repair and remove the sheds in less than a decade!
