Wagner Park opens July 29

Wagner Park, which has been closed for construction for three years since summer 2022 in order to elevate the park for flooding reasons, will reopen on Monday, July 29. Thanks to N. for the shots — though it is hard to imagine a finished park in four weeks from these views. (Those are renderings below, a placeholder till I can get in there for a tour.)

The construction plans for the park were met with skepticism — to say the least — by neighbors, who sued to stop the Battery Park City Authority from gutting the place and in the process destroying dozens of mature trees. But the BPCA prevailed.

The space will have a mix of open lawns and planted gardens, and the new park pavilions will still contain a restaurant (it used to be Gigino South), public restrooms and a public roof deck. (Plus this addition that cracked me up: a public telephone!! I don’t think it’s a bad idea, but are there any anywhere else?) The public art will be restored.

They have already announced a string of events in the park starting July 29, the opening day of the park, through October featuring NY Laughs, The Moth, Alvin Ailey, Battery Dance, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Skyscraper Museum, Poets House, and more. See their events calendar here.

  1. Great! Any idea when Battery Park is supposed to be reopening? Area is so congested with the ticket hawkers and tourists over there.

  2. Any restaurants that you know of coming there soon? I really miss Gigino.

  3. Will there be security? Was public restrooms being open? I’m sure it might be a place for homeless and drugs. Want the kids in the Neighbourhood to be safe.

    • This area was never known to be even slightly dangerous in my long experience. There were large, properly maintained public restrooms before that I imagine will return, probably improved.
