BATTERY DANCE FESTIVAL STARTS SATURDAY
Battery Dance’s 44th annual free festival starts August 9 in the newly opened Wagner Park featuring the Limón Dance Company. The festival then resumes on Tuesday, August 12, and runs through Saturday, August 16, in Rockefeller Park. All shows start at 7p. There will be eight dance companies from around the world and eight New York-based companies. See the full performance schedule here.
GOVERNORS ISLAND FERRY GOES ELECTRIC
Governors Island will launch a new hybrid-electric ferry (the first in NYC) later this summer, part of the $10 million in U.S. Federal Transit Administration funding the city secured in 2023 to support ferry operations serving Governors Island and Staten Island. One $7.5 million grant funded the installation of shoreside rapid charging infrastructure to support the fully electric operations of the new hybrid-electric ferry. (The other grant, for $3 million, funded the rehabilitation of a New York City Department of Transportation offsite storage facility supporting operations of the Staten Island Ferry.)
PLAY TENNIS AT BROOKFIELD PLACE
Brookfield Place will add a tennis court to its waterfront plaza from August 19 to 28 and will a bunch of free programming and open-court play — reservations for that open Thursday, August 7, at 10a. Sessions are a half hour. Register here. They have some raquets available, but they recommend bringing your own.
HIDDEN BARS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
I stumbled on an Eater list of hidden bars — speakeasys — and thought I would add to the list. They mention Saint Tuesday and Peachy’s, but there’s also The Little Shop at the Seaport; The House of the Red Pearl at the Tin Building; Apotheke in Chinatown; and I would add Django at the Roxy Hotel, which while not really hidden, you have to know to know. Anything I am missing??
