A. sent a note that the signs are up in the window for Blank Street Coffee at 32 Avenue of the Americas, the classic 1932 – Ralph Walker commercial building, at the southeast corner of Sixth and Walker (actually it is a square block between Church and Lispenard as well).
I will update if they send me a date, but last time they didn’t respond so we may just have to watch and wait.
The company has taken 2900 square feet of the ground floor — and if I recall the meeting correctly, this will make it one of the biggest of their 36 (!!) coffee shops in the city. (The one on Church and Murray opened in 2022.)
Launched in 2020 as a coffee cart in Brooklyn, Blank Street is known for its specialty coffees and matcha beverages. In fact this one will be Blank Street Coffee & Matcha Shop. They also have shops in Boston, Washington DC, London and a bunch of other UK cities.
The 1.2 million-square-foot building, which is only about 60 percent occupied, recently got an extension on its loans. I think these plans are now on hold, but in 2023 there were some cool ideas presented to CB1 to enliven the streetscape there.

What Blank Street Coffee should be really known for is their business model: VC money with a low-labor cost business model looking to replace smaller, independent coffee shops.
Pass.
This. Don’t support this company. Support your locally owned coffee shop.
How much foot traffic is on that corner?
Often seems to be quite a bit, due to the subway entrance/exit being right there. Also the building itself and its office residents would probably provide a lot of customers.
they don’t have great customer services – just talking to each other. and pretty weak coffee. won’t be frequenting.
Isn’t there a Starbucks on the corner one block south?
There was a Starbuck’s on this corner, also one on Broadway by the Chase bank. Both are gone. Hopefully they get replaced by something better.
Is this the former Starbucks space?
Yes
I thought that building went in front of CB1 or something to get new frontage and look better. What happened to that?
Link in the post. Plans are on hold.
