Not exactly a sneak peek, since they are open and you can get in there yourself! But I did stop by Modern Bread & Bagel, the much anticipated gluten free bakery on Church and Duane, which opened last week. They were prepping for an event so I wasn’t able to buy anything; will stop by next week for a good sampling. In the meantime, know that their GF bagels are excellent — we make pilgrimages to the 14th Street shop.

The store as we know is inside the former Duane Street Hotel, which is now operating as…Duane Hotel. (See more on that here; it’s hotel chain whiplash.) Oddly, it is not really separate from the lobby — it sort of spills into it. Nonetheless, the bagels and baked goods are all right there, along with coffee offerings. There are a few seats on the southern end of the space.

This is not just a bakery; there are sandwiches, open-faced melts, a separate list of egg sandwiches, salads and more. There are spreads, smoked fish, signature lattes. They also sell packaged GF cake mixes. Handy.
