New Kid on the Block: Blank Street at 32 Avenue of the Americas

In a very heartening addition, Blank Street has opened a roomy location on the Sixth/Walker corner — its third below Canal and 36th in the city. This is of course the classic 1932 Ralph Walker commercial building that takes up the square block between Church and Avenue of the Americas, Walker and Lispenard.

The shop is 2900 square feet of the ground floor — and if I recall correctly, this will make it one of their biggest in the city. The one on Church and Murray opened in 2022; there is another coming to West and Vesey.

Launched in 2020 as a coffee cart in Brooklyn, Blank Street is known for its specialty coffees and matcha beverages. In fact this one is actually Blank Street Coffee & Matcha Shop. A large coffee is $2.95; cappucino $5.40; matcha latte $5.65. Then there’s a selection of specialty matcha drinks, like the Daydream, with cinnamon, honey and vanilla bean.

They also launched an ice cream menu at this location — stay tuned for an update on that. In the meantime, they offer four flavors: vanilla bean affogato, mocha, white chocolate matcha and strawberry shortcake matcha; and all come with a hard shell topping.

The space is roomy and cool, with a circuitous tiled entrance and several cozy window seats. There was a family playing cards in the middle when I was there. Love.

32 Avenue of the Americas is 1.2 million square feet and last I heard was only about 60 percent occupied. I think these plans are now on hold, but in 2023 there were some cool ideas presented to CB1 to enliven the streetscape there.
