Alexander and Bonin‘s new gallery is a big change geographically—the company called Chelsea home for 19 years—but also in terms of sheer size: At 7,500 square feet, the Walker Street space is nearly double that of their former location. “That means we now have three or four exhibition spaces spread over the two levels,” said Carolyn Alexander, who founded the gallery with Ted Bonin in Soho in 1995. “And we finally have a dedicated video room.” As she showed me around the offices, she pointed out how accessible they are: “No velvet rope. We encourage people to walk in.”

When asked if the gallery, which represents 22 artists, specializes in any particular type of art, Alexander replied, “It’s hard to put in a neat package,” citing contemporary painting, sculpture, video…. “Another great thing about having more space is that we can expand beyond artists we consider primary.” The new location debuts tomorrow with solo exhibitions of work by Ree Morton, Mark Morrisroe, and Willie Doherty. If you can’t make it to the all-day opening (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), the gallery will also be open this Sunday for Open House New York.
