Having recently sublet the front of 9 N. Moore for the M.S. Apothecary and CsillaWear pop-ups, Ameena Meer has launched a gallery in the space. Called Openspace, it’s a partnership between Meer (whose home and ad agency, Take Out Creative, are also at 9 N. Moore) and Mustafa Farhad Zahir (an artist and creative director of a Tribeca non-profit).
If you’ve been to the previous pop-ups, you know it’s a small space, but that makes it all the friendlier—when I walked in, I had no choice but to introduce myself and start chatting, which isn’t exactly the norm at galleries. A curved wall adds elegance and character, and Meer says visitors may find her doing work at the table in the middle of the room.
The current exhibit is “Paris & Selected Works” by a photographer named Pipi. The images, many of which were taken at Paris cemeteries, have a wonderfully woozy beauty. The one above is “Graveyard 3,” a 28″-by-28″ archival c-print. There’s no word yet on what the next exhibit will be, but it will be “art with resonance,” says Meer. “Our Sufi practice draws us to work that is awe-inspiring, transporting, transformative, and even healing.”
Openspace is at 9 N. Moore (bet. W. Broadway and Varick); 917-464-4548, openspacenyc.com. It’s open 1–7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and also by appointment. Recent NKOTB articles
