New Kid on the Block: Harry’s Italian

It says something about Harry and Peter Poulakakos’s confidence in their operation that they feel comfortable opening a 100-seat restaurant—in this case, Harry’s Italian in Goldman Alley—with no friends-and-family warm-up. There was a charitable event, but that’s it. When I mentioned as much to some of the many folks running around at 11 a..m.—minutes before the opening—they shrugged it off.

The new restaurant will be like Harry’s Italian on Gold Street, with the main exception that the focus at the FiDi location is more on family-style (the Goldman Alley outpost can serve family-style to groups). The classic Italian menu is mostly the same at lunch and dinner—click to enlarge the menu photos and you’ll see that prices may differ based on the meal—except the sandwiches are only available at lunch, and round pizzas and calzones are only available at dinner.

The room is decorated in Modern American Masculine style, with dark wood, tile floor, black-and-white photos, etc. The windows open up to the outside, where around 25 of the seats are. Across the street way is another Poulakakos production, Vintry Fine Wines. Peter says the two won’t have a formal business relationship, but it is an opportunity for a “fun synergy.” (It certainly gives one hope for the wine list, not usually a strong suit at pizza-focused restaurants; for you beer folks I did notice current favorite Captain Lawrence among the options on tap.)

Delivery is running (via Seamless) starting now. There’s also a weekend brunch deal—$17 for unlimited mimosas and Bloody Marys from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.—and a late-night bar menu of pizzas and bites. The closing time is normally 2 a.m., but they say they’ll stay open if you walk in with a minute to spare.

One note about the photos: They were hustling to get ready, so don’t mind the occasional server. Also, that’s Harry in the photo at top. I wasn’t planning on including him—I would’ve asked—but my other façade shot was blurry.

Harry’s Italian is at 225 Murray (between West and North End), 212-608-1007; harrysitalian.com.

  1. I ate there today for lunch and had the bowtie pasta with shrimp and asparagus. The shrimp itself was very good but there were about 3 small shrimps in the dish. Aside from the shrimp, the dish was quite bland. Disappointed but hoping its just a growing pain.
