Could not have said it better! — McGee on In the News: Citigroup Renovation Update
I have witnessed a group of teens (few white, few asian, and one or two black/Hispanic) running through the battery park neighborhood wearing hoodies. They menace the neighborhood destroying signs at Brookfield and halting traffic. I've seen this same group with a short stocky Asian kid leading the pack. I noticed him as the same group of kids who pulled down their pants and mooning the on coming traffic on South End Avenue last summer. I've watched them violently running past families and babies with no regard making loud gang noise. I know for a fact, a few of them live in Battery Park because I've seen the one I recognize walking casually in the neighborhood without his gang of friends near Gateway. — Susan on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City

Erik: Important article. You do very helpful reporting for all in the neighborhood. It would be great if you/other media can help shed light on the scope of the alleged issue so the community can act accordingly. — Jj on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
Love these Photos Erik... I've lived in this hood for 41 years. You make seem like its never changed. Thanks! — tommy flynn on Ode to Canal Street
There are a lot of good points raised here which seem to be ignored elsewhere. Fearless girl is a pretty impressive piece in itself All for moving her elsewhere to stand on her own merits. — Rohin on In the News: Citigroup Renovation Update
Erik, Love the Chanel reference in an architectural context! :) Design is not too bad but agree that the grey texture makes it look a bit strange. Would have looked far better if they kept things simple and replaced the grey with the light sand color. Building would have felt more contextually grounded with the neighborhood as well... — Rohin on Seen & Heard: The New Restaurant in Truffles Tribeca
Tribeca's Most Wanted???? hahahahahahaha first world problems. — AndyC on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
These remind me of Roy Colmer's "Doors, NYC" from 1976, which you wrote about a couple of years ago. Here's 329 Canal Street, for example: https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/aea7cced-6bd8-982c-e040-e00a1806318e — James on Ode to Canal Street

I can readily believe the 1st Precinct was unaware. With respect to the otherwise low crime rate in the area, as Barry Switzer once said, "Some people are born on third base and go through life thinking they hit a triple." — James on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
I'm with you Erik re the Fearless Girl. I (a woman) worked on the Street during the "Boom Boom Room" era and still see it as an all too glib and easy, virtue signaling bit of advertising that totally changes the meaning of the original work. The raging bull doesn't represent Wall Street (the market is both bulls and bears, ya know), it represents a rising stock market and thus prosperity. So the girl is standing athwart prosperity? Makes no sense at all as a positive message for State Street to be sending. Even in the context that State Street and the artist meant the pair to be seen, it's actually ridiculous -- they are subtly reinforcing the idea that it's ok for Wall Street men to refer to and treat women in their workplace as little girls there to ruin the fun. — N on In the News: Citigroup Renovation Update
Perspicacious is a great word. — Andrea on In the News: Citigroup Renovation Update
With all this neighborhood attention I couldn't believe that the NYPD (1st precinct) was unaware of what was going on. Here's what I was told: "The First Precinct is very aware of this problem and they are holding a Community Council Meeting this Thursday at 6:30 at the 1st Precinct. Everyone is invited to attend. I am sure you can get all answers there." — Marc on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
Exactly. What's missing from this discussion are the unspoken issues of class and race, playing out against the hyper-affluent backdrop of Tribeca and BPC. Has anyone gathered any clear evidence or information about who these kids are and where they live and go to school? Are they, as is being suggested or surmised, rich white kids playacting at being "toughs" and mimicking the roles of gang behavior until they actually are doing exactly the same threatening, bullying and destructive things that kid gangs do. You can bet that if these kids were outside "interlopers" from the NYCHA projects on the LES coming over to mess with Tribeca folks, local residents would have the police down on them instantly. — james on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
Kudos to both Erik here and Carl G at Trib Trib for calling the West St incident a "crash" or "collision" rather than "accident." Would that our dailies were so perspicacious. — Komanoff on In the News: Citigroup Renovation Update
I was sorry to see this string of comments. Arguments about how bad the harassment is, and race and privilege’s role are not going to be productive paths to resolution. Whenever anyone sees behaviors that are unacceptable and what one would consider harassing, by anyone, the best next step is to contact the NYPD and file a report. They are the only entity that has jurisdiction in all areas discussed in this article – which include private property. There is nothing like a trip to the precinct to help assuage this kind of behavior. Our community can come together by coordinating with our community board and governing entities to make sure we maintain a peaceful environment in our neighborhood. — TJBNYC on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
While I realize this thread primarily discusses BPC: a few months back, my wife and I were walking with our 3-year old on Greenwich in the middle of the day when we witnessed a group of teens—both black & white—verbally harassing each passerby while several aggressively rode skateboards on the sidewalks (often forcing pedestrians into the street on onto storefront steps). The were loud, belligerent and most definitely threatening. They continued this behavior as they gathered on the corner of Reade—culminating with a skateboarder doing a jump onto the hood of a Mercedes parked at the corner, obviously causing significant damage. They high-fived amongst themselves and boisterously celebrated the destruction. But what was most alarming was how completely unfazed they were by neighborhood residents yelling for them to stop with threats of calling the police (which several of us did). Fortunately, I've not seen or heard of any other incidents before or since, so this may be isolated or perhaps was effectively managed by the police. — Steven on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
Of course we can't wrile up the delinquents; I can't believe what I'm reading. — Albert on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
And the police were called, they could care less. — Anon on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
In my incident they were not African American, they were white. — Anon on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
UNBELIEVABLE. They should be given a place to hang out, not a public place like a park??? You and their self-entitled, absentee parents are part of the problem. — Albert on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
There is a bit of curiosity here and let me be clear whatever this is it should be stopped..if there were so many incidents did the victims and/or witnesses call the police and be willing to file a report? Did they not want to bother, if so then telling people afterwards is not helping because Police need people to file reports...silence when it counts could be contributing. Brookfield& Goldman alley are all private property and the uniformed police walking there are paid like the security guards and all private...they may not call the police unless people press them and then someone is still willing to wait and file a report. We dont need a neighborhood watch, we need people to help the police... — TMKM on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
I agreed with you Will. I was thinking the SAME thing. I'm shocked that the police is not as involved as if this "gang" were young kids of color. I had to say it. — Mimi on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
I have an experience which was quite awful the teens through eggs at my car with baby sitting in back. They are quite ruthless — Rosalie on Teens Are Terrorizing Battery Park City
