Any idea who the new owners are? More condos? — Elca on Joy Gryson Is Moving Out
Fair point, but the editorial page of the Post isn't an architect either. The Oculus is a beautiful piece of work that the vast majority of people will love, but like most great art, not everyone is going to agree. :-) — Luis Vazquez (FiDi Fan Page) on In the News: One Tribeca Building Got Through the Landmarks Logjam
While the article is positive, it's by the paper's city columnist, David W. Dunlap, not the architecture critic, Michael Kimmelman (so technically it's not the review). — Erik Torkells on In the News: One Tribeca Building Got Through the Landmarks Logjam
The New York Times just printed a rave review of the Oculus! This is what the majority opinion will be. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/25/nyregion/oculus-centerpiece-of-transit-hub-and-selfie-magnet-is-set-to-open.html?smid=tw-share — Luis Vazquez (FiDi Fan Page) on In the News: One Tribeca Building Got Through the Landmarks Logjam
The transportation hub *technically* is related to a series of entrance and exit passages, just not from a theater. And the Post gets to print the word "vomit" Barnum's Museum, once located nearby at Broadway and Ann, took advantage of a similar misconception to keep customers moving through and not loitering in the museum. He posted a sign saying "This Way to the Egress." Customers who unknowingly followed the sign out the exit had to pay another admission to re-enter. — James on In the News: One Tribeca Building Got Through the Landmarks Logjam
Yes, that's what the word means, but the lede still doesn't make any sense. They just wanted to jam in the word somewhere. — Erik Torkells on In the News: One Tribeca Building Got Through the Landmarks Logjam
The Oculus is a stunning work of Art and will be an instant landmark; a true Grand Central Station for the 21st Century. The public will indeed decide and not the New York Post. Having been a volunteer at the 9/11 Memorial for over two years, I heard what many visitors said. Almost 100% said they thought it was amazing and they couldn't wait to come back to see the finished product. It will become one of the city's top attractions and rightly so. — Luis Vazquez (FiDi Fan Page) on In the News: One Tribeca Building Got Through the Landmarks Logjam
vom·i·to·ri·um ˌväməˈtôrēəm/ noun noun: vomitorium; plural noun: vomitoria 1. each of a series of entrance or exit passages in an ancient Roman amphitheater or theater. 2. a place in which, according to popular misconception, the ancient Romans are supposed to have vomited during feasts to make room for more food. — James on In the News: One Tribeca Building Got Through the Landmarks Logjam
You get kudos from me for two reasons: I'm a data visualization geek (love the spreadsheet) and of course I live and buy groceries here. — Noah on Supermarket Price Check!
The new one will be a 7-12. You know, like Kansas Fried Chicken. — j frank on Seen & Heard: Another 7-Eleven?
Yeah...but most franchisers offer protected areas. I'm surprised 7-Eleven corporate would sell two franchises this close to each other. — Makes you go "hmmm..." on Seen & Heard: Another 7-Eleven?
Please note TriBeCaNs that the 1% are the only ones that can afford to shop at Best Market, so all you commoners get to steppin' down to the five & dime Whole Foods. — Jim Smithers on Supermarket Price Check!
thanks so much for doing this, I'm always wondering... Wholefoods butter is cheaper by the way (at least it was cheaper than FE and FD last time I checked) — Liat on Supermarket Price Check!
(Bad form to reply to my own post, sorry) Also worth taking into account, unless you're stuck on, say, Philadelphia brand cream cheese or Tropicana brand OJ, the Whole Foods brands for these products are rather good for everyday consumption and, for example, 64 oz. of 365 OJ is $2.99. — David G. Imber on Supermarket Price Check!
It would be interesting to add the Key Food (55 Fulton, downstairs) to the survey. For me this supermarket is geographically convenient and seems to beat everyone else on most everyday stuff. — David G. Imber on Supermarket Price Check!
Contrary to what many people believe, all 7-Elevens are actually franchises - so in effect these are individual entrepreneurs operating their own small business. Keep this in mind haters! — Bruce on Seen & Heard: Another 7-Eleven?
I was always thinking about this. Nice job Erik ! — tommy flynn on Supermarket Price Check!
Are you comparing identical items or just "deli turkey?" As Eric showed, Whole Foods has very competitive prices, especially when you look at organic and "high end" products. I just got home from Best Market and was shocked by the prices on green cleaning items. I don't see the two being in competition at all--one's the conventional grocery store and the other is the organic/health food store. — JD on Supermarket Price Check!
My problem with Fresh Direct is all the boxes I have to get rid of. I wish that Fairway had come in, but they're having massive financial problems right now. — Christy C on Supermarket Price Check!
A great piece of investigative journalism. Results are as expected, but I never had the proof until now. GG can charge whatever they like because there's no competition in NE Tribeca - NE Tribeca is just glad to have a place to buy food. — JH on Supermarket Price Check!
HAHAHA! — Luis Vazquez on Supermarket Price Check!
It's an old article, but the results above are confirmed in it http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-09-03/whole-foods-plays-bargain-grocer-in-manhattan — J on Supermarket Price Check!
Curious enough to do it yourself? — Erik Torkells on Supermarket Price Check!
Would be curious to see how Amazon Fresh compares. — Jk on Supermarket Price Check!
After 20 years of the Food Emporium, Best Market feels like the Twilight Zone. People waling the aisles with their jaws dropped, as in "Is this for real?" The staff is so nice and helpful, the food is fresh, the aisles are organized, it's so clean. An older woman said with a smile "'Ive been around long enough to know fresh food. Produce from the Food Emporium wasn't edible. I don't mind paying for it if it's good, and now I'm going to gain so much weight..." The prices seemed very good to me, no long lines like Whole Foods, I'm sold on the new biz in town. — Betsy Pearce on Supermarket Price Check!
