Trucks idling in on street parking spaces on West Broadway between Franklin and Leonard pose a similar problem. I do not understand why Fresh Direct (and Amazon on Warren by Whole Foods) can legally occupy these paces 24/7. So sad. My dad parked there 6 days a week since 9/11 when he stopped parking in the lot next to Gee Whiz. When we opened Tribeca’s Kitchen in 2014, he kept his space there even there were closer lots to TK. Larry was a loyal and committed man. For so many people including my dad, Larry was the first person who greeted my dad in Tribeca every day as he dropped his car off and walked to TK, rain or shine. He was a sure thing in a world and city filled with uncertainty. What sad news this is. Larry always greeted me with a smile and asked about my family. He was a proud father and grandfather. I remember how happy he was when he visited his family or they came to NYC. He was excited that his grandson played football. I learned all of this just talking to him on that corner. Even though it doesn't fit the standard definition, we considered each other friends. What an (unfortunate) surprise to hear about this in 2021. Good riddance. My wife and I encountered her outside the St. Nicholas Shrine, shortly after the park's opening in late 2019. We were cutting through with our recently-adopted dog and had a similar altercation. Brandishing her newspaper and all! Totally agree with the out of control counterfeit street vendors scene. The city so far hasn’t addressed this problem at all. But it’s mostly on Broadway/Canal Street. I don’t see the connection between this and business closing in Tribeca. These spas and restaurants have lost a lot of customers due to Covid. In the area of "maybe not closed for good," The Wooly is listed on Yelp as planning to re-open on October 1. The website is also still active and seems to be receiving updates.
