Seen & Heard: Best Market Is Hiring

••• Still no sign of work at City Vineyard, the restaurant that was supposed to open this summer at Pier 26.

••• From Daniel Squadron’s office: “The first meeting of the joint school overcrowding task force has been confirmed for February 5 at 4 p.m., at 250 Broadway.”

••• As David noted, Best Market sent out an email announcing that it’s hiring for several locations, including the Tribeca store.

••• There’s not much inside Fress, the new deli at 107 Church, to indicate that the proprietors chose the name for its German meaning.

Fress••• Believe it or not, another deli has opened in the area. It’s at 30 Grand (between Thompson and Sixth Ave.), right next to the new Maison Close lingerie shop. Not sure they have much clientele overlap, though; Apni Deli appears to be aimed at taxi drivers.

Apni Deli Apni Deli sign••• From New York Law School: “This January 22 event with Eva Moskowitz [of Success Academy Charter Schools] might interest you. It is free and open to the public, with reservations preferred. As an alternative,  you can watch the livestream or view the talk on-demand at CityLandnyc.org. But, these are unfiltered discussions and the Q&A is open to all, so in-person is more interesting. Plus, there’s coffee.”

••• “Law & Order: SVU” is shooting in the Broadway/Chambers area on Tuesday.

  1. I was on Grand Street and walked into Apni Deli to check it out. I order chapati and yellow dahl. It was spicy and fresh and tasted like food an “auntie” would make. It is targeted at taxi drivers, but if you want tasty Indian vegetarian food that doesn’t taste like every other Indian restaurant in the city, give this a try.

  2. Tried going to Apni Deli 2x around 7ish in the evening on a weekday past 2 weeks and it was closed both times. :(
