Progress Report: Opening Laterish

In Progress Report: Opening Soonish, I looked at the businesses due to open in the next month and a half. Here’s what’s farther out on the horizon. One caveat: A lot of the info is from months ago and is unconfirmable. Of course, if you know anyone who might know more, please email me at tribecacitizen@gmail.com.

UNNAMED RESTAURANT (75 WORTH) COMPOSE
Location:
75 77 Worth (between Church and Broadway)
What was there before:
N/A?
What we know about it:
Nothing beyond what was learned at the April CB1 Tribeca committee meeting: The owners of RBC NYC are opening a restaurant and bar next door at 75 Worth, between Church and Broadway, across from the AT&T Long Lines Building. The space is tiny—just 575 square feet, with 20 seats—and the menu will be tapas, as well as a 10-course tasting menu. The door is reservation-only. (A recent email to RBC NYC went unreturned.)
Opening date: “Hopefully by the end of fall,” said a staffer at RBC NYC. October.

UNNAMED RESTAURANT (313 CHURCH) TRIBECA CANVAS
Location:
313 Church (between Lispenard and Walker)
What was there before:
Restaurants Dennis Foy, and before that, Lo Scalco.
What we know about it:
Last September, when the liquor-license application for a new Masaharu Morimoto restaurant went before the CB1 Tribeca committee, a sample menu was presented that, according to the Tribeca Trib, included “Western staples like fish and chips, homemade bagels, and fried bananas,” as well as “East Asian standards like hayashi rice, bibimbop, and steamed dumplings.”
Opening date: TBD. Something is happening in there but I can’t tell how much. I’m hoping to hear back from Morimoto’s PR rep. December.

PIZZERIA LUZZO’S
Location: 275 Church (between White and Franklin)
What was there before: Neighborhood Bar & Restaurant.
What we know about it: Just today Crain’s reported this: “A new brick oven will soon be fired up in Tribeca. Pizzeria Luzzo’s has signed a lease for space at 275 Church St., between White and Franklin streets, for what will be its third Manhattan location. The restaurant, which has operated an East Village outpost for several years and just leased space in Chelsea six months ago, signed a 10-year lease for about 1,900 square feet on the ground floor, plus the same amount of space in the basement. Luzzo’s is expected to open within three months in the space, which formerly housed a restaurant and already is equipped with a full kitchen and vent.”
Opening date: November.

SARABETH’S
Location:
339 Greenwich (at Jay)
What was there before:
Bazzini, a grocery and café.
What we know about it:
“We’re going to have a nice retail section—baked goods and all the products that Sarabeth’s makes, in a separate area—and we’ll be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” said co-founder Bill Levine in February. He also said there would be outdoor seating, on Greenwich.
Opening date:
Five months later, in June, Levine said the opening was looking like it’d be in December. Seeing as how that’s four months away, I see no reason to bug him again just yet.

BRUSHSTROKE
Location:
30 Hudson (between Duane and Reade)
What was there before:
Two David Bouley restaurants—Secession, and before that, Danube.
What we know about it:
When I checked in with Nicole Bouley two weeks ago, she said that David Bouley’s role at Brushstroke (at one point known as Boji) will be part owner/consultant, and that the head chefs will be Chef Mikami from Osaka and Chef Yamada from Kyoto. The Tsuji Cooking School will send students and professors to work in the restaurant.
Opening date:
January 2011.

GLAD TIDINGS TABERNACLE
Location:
177 Franklin (between Greenwich and Hudson)
What was there before:
Not sure.
What we know about it:
Established in 1907—with only four pastors since—Glad Tidings is an Assemblies of God church currently pastored by Revs. Carl and Donna Keyes and Rev. Matt Huett. Based at 20 Murray, the church is meeting at 23 Park Place until its new building is ready. On its website, Glad Tidings describes itself as “a culturally diverse church with an emphasis on practical teaching, supportive fellowship, and furthering God’s kingdom. With a strong vision to build a better city, Glad Tidings actively reaches out to the community to change lives. Church programs express God’s Word and His love in many ways through various media: from the pulpit, on the streets, through music, drama, art and dance.
Opening date:
The website says “opening 2010,” but the woman who answered the phone wasn’t ready to commit to a date. “It’s really up in the air,” she said. “We’re working super hard to get it ready, but there are no confirmed dates yet. We’re waiting for certificates.”

UNNAMED RESTAURANT (365 GREENWICH)
Location:
365 Greenwich (between Harrison and Franklin)
What was there before:
Fitz’s Pig & Whistle.
What we know about it:
In May, Nicholas McKeon—who once worked at Fitz’s Pig-N-Whistle—applied for a liquor license for a restaurant he described as akin to Walker’s. The restaurant menu was to be American-bar-and-grill, with ‘reasonable’ prices. I haven’t seen much work going on there, however, so who knows.
Opening date:
TBD.

UNNAMED RESTAURANT (50 HUDSON)
Location:
50 Hudson (at Thomas)
What was there before:
Paul Kohn Design.
What we know about it:
Here’s what I wrote after the CB1 Tribeca committee meeting in April. “The owner of the building, whose first name is Eric—people don’t really get much of an introduction at these meetings—plans on opening a chocolate-based business there. (‘The concept is coffee, cacao, and cocktails,’ he said, explaining that it would be a café, bar, bakery, restaurant, and shop). The cooking/baking would only use electric power; the occupancy is below 74; and the drinks would incorporate the best chocolate liqueur he’s ever tasted (‘and I don’t drink’). The chocolate—a new type, protected by 30 patents—will be made elsewhere.” The windows have been papered over, a sign that work is underway.
Opening date: TBD.

UNNAMED RESTAURANT/MARKET (94 CHAMBERS)
Location:
94 Chambers (between Church and Broadway)
What was there before:
Jhankar, an Indian restaurant.
What we know about it:
Nothing other than the permit in the window mentions a “renovation of existing restaurant to a food market.” But it also says a “kitchen exhaust hood system” is being installed; perhaps what’s coming is a market selling prepared food? Construction is definitely happening, so we’ll find out soon enough.
Opening date: TBD.

UNNAMED RESTAURANT (135 W. BROADWAY)
Location:
135 W. Broadway (between Thomas and Duane)
What was there before:
Hoi An, a Vietnamese-Japanese restaurant.
What we know about it:
The permit posted says the space will be an “eating & drinking establishment,” the second floor included. The third floor will be a caretaker’s apartment. Work is underway.
Opening date:
TBD.

UNNAMED RESTAURANT (109 W. BROADWAY)
Location:
109 W. Broadway (between Duane and Reade)
What was there before:
Greek restaurant Delphi.
What we know about it:
In April, Matt Abramcyck—an owner of Warren 77 and Smith & Mills—told the CB1 Tribeca committee that he plans to open a South American restaurant with 27 tables on the ground floor and a few in the basement (the ground-floor bar seats just five), and that his wife would be using the second floor for a salon business. How much progress has been made is unclear.
Opening date:
TBD.

UNNAMED RESTAURANT (159 DUANE)
Location:
159 Duane (between Hudson and W. Broadway)
What was there before:
Blue Bench, a children’s furniture store.
What we know about it:
In May, a Tribeca couple went before the CB1 Tribeca committee to request a liquor license for a restaurant they compared to Marlow & Sons. At that time, they had yet to sign a lease. In June, another party was before the committee asking for a liquor license for the same space: “Kathryn Weatherup and Michael Maddy, who already have a bar called Weather Up in Prospect Heights (Brooklyn),” according to my notes. “Weather Up Tribeca would be—according to the materials handed out—’an artisanal cocktail bar paired with a sophisticated Raw Bar’ with ‘hand-cracked ice,’ ‘vaulted subway tile ceiling,’ ‘kid leather banquettes’, ‘polished bronze bar,’ and ‘vintage heart pine flooring.’ It’ll have an occupancy of 74, with 50 seats, including those at the bar.” The first couple says they abandoned their plans, and I can’t reach anyone for Weather Up, but I peeked in and there were construction workers inside.
Opening date:
TBD.

PARK51
Location:
49–51 Park Place (between W. Broadway and Church)
What was there before:
Burlington Coat Factory.
What we know about it:
The proposal for a mosque and Islamic cultural center has been met with opposition from people who would prefer it not be two blocks from the northern edge of the Wold Trade Center site. As it stands now, the plan calls for a new building—as big as 15 stories tall—with a 500-seat auditorium, fitness facilities (including a pool), a restaurant and culinary school, a memorial to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, and more.
Opening date:
TBD.

A TOTAL MYSTERY
Location: 157 Hudson (between Laight and Hubert)
What was there before: Not sure.
What we know about it: There is evidence of construction inside, but the permit in the window offers no clues.
Opening date: TBD.
