New Kid on the Block: Muse Paintbar

Muse Paintbar Tribeca5“We think of it as entertainment more than an art lesson,” says Stan Finch, president of Muse Paintbar, now open in the former Telepan Local space. “We’re not going to rap your wrist if you’re not doing it right.”

Mus Paintbar Tribeca roomYou don’t have to know a thing about art when you sign up for your class, which will last around two hours and cost around $45, and you don’t have to bring anything. The instructor, an artist him- or herself, will break down the process into ten to fifteen steps, and you’ll leave with a finished painting. Muse has a library of 650 designs to pull from, with a dozen more added each week; some, like Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” are in the public domain, but most are Muse artists’ creations. “You can go off script, if you want,” says Finch. “We’ll try to facilitate it as best we can.” Beer and wine are available for purchase, as is a small menu of snacks.

Founded in 2012, Muse Paintbar initially focused on New England, but it has since broadened to the New York City area; the Tribeca outpost, the company’s twelfth, is the first in New York City proper. “Customers come and then make a night out of it, so it’s synergistic to be close to everything right around here,” says Finch. “We went to the Hideaway last night, and three of our customers from earlier were there with their paintings.”

As you might expect, Muse is popular for private events, for adults and children. The main room upstairs can handle 48 people, and the two private studios have space for 22 (upstairs) and 36 (downstairs).

“For over half of our customers, this is the first time they’ve done anything artistic since grade school,” says Finch. But it’s not uncommon for some to pursue it more seriously after visiting Muse. “A lot of them decide to go get weekly lessons. We can recommend instructors, and of course a lot of our artists can help.”

Muse Paintbar is at 329 Greenwich (between Jay and Duane), 646-760-6100; musepaintbar.com.
