Those of us who had never been inside Kiki de Montparnasse‘s store when it was in Soho might be surprised how much the brand offers beyond lingerie: There’s also eveningwear, a new line of matte black swimwear based on popular lingerie silhouettes, and cashmere loungewear that’s more cozy than coquettish. Quality is paramount; everything is made in small batches in New York City.
Then again, Kiki virgins might also be surprised when, as we go deeper into the new Franklin Street store, the emphasis shifts from appearances to actions. Call me a tease, but I’m not spilling all details. Kiki is one of those shops where surprise is an important element of the experience: You’ll giggle, you’ll gasp, you’ll blush—and you might just leave with a new notion or two.
The company is using the move as an opportunity to make some changes and introduce new programs. For one, the art collection is entirely for sale. For another, because the design team is just downstairs, they can customize pieces, such as monogramming and embroidery. And there’s a new emphasis on events, both private (such as bachelorette or anniversary parties) and ticketed (perhaps an erotic drawing class).
Stop by anytime for a Champagne toast; call ahead and they’ll also prepare an aphrodisiac or two. The store is open till 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday.
Kiki de Montparnasse is at 102 Franklin (between Sixth and W. Broadway), 212-965-8070; kikidm.com.
