Woodrow’s has closed permanently

I am late to report that Woodrow’s, the pub on the northside of Murray just west of Church, closed permanently at the new year when their lease ended. It had been 10 years since Erin Garmont opened — in February 2012 — what she promised would be “something between a dive and a fancy restaurant, the kind of place where a woman can come in and not be afraid of how dirty the bathroom might be.” Which is such an on-point description of a neighborhood joint.

“It didn’t make sense to renew taking into consideration the rent amount and the hardships city businesses are still facing,” Erin said. “It was a great 10 years and I love and will miss Tribeca!”

But she added the happy news that she and her husband, a NYC fireman, are expecting a baby boy in July. (Scroll down for her other recent productions and the last shot of the pub’s namesake at the bar.) “So we will enjoy that news for now. Hopefully I will see you at Taste of Tribeca (only as a guest this year unfortunately).”

Erin was a rare breed: I can’t think of another woman-owned bar in Tribeca Estancia 460’s expansion next door by owner Stacey Sosa could be the only other one? And here’s the list of women-owned restaurants that’s building thanks to comments: Pascaline Lepeltier at the former (and soon to be again) Racine’s; Elisa Marshall at Maman; Michelle Gauthier at Mulberry & Vine; Lynn Wagenknecht at the Odeon; Lan Cao at Viet Cafe; Stacey Sosa at Estancia 460; and Monica Von Thun Calderón at Grandaisy. Comment if I missed someone.

Woodrow’s ended its run with a champagne toast, for symmetry. When the bar opened its doors in 2012, they served a glass of complimentary champagne to their first guests — a couple who had gotten engaged minutes before.

It’s a loss.
