Sidebar: The storefronts of 450 Washington

Before the big news broke about the lawsuit between owners of Big Gay Ice Cream, I wanted to get a handle on the commercial spaces there — a couple of readers had commented. So it seems there are three, and two are hopefully coming soon.

The Greek Tribeca, which was Greca originally until owner Tom Galis closed The Greek a bit further down on Washington and combined the two in March 2020, now has fresh signage and thankfully, no more sidewalk bridge to obscure its windows. (It’s closed now until Sept. 10 for vacation.) The restaurant was vegetarian but clearly no more, since rack of lamb is the first main listed on the menu online. Big Gay Ice Cream, which just recently added benches on the street and has what looks like a finished interior. There is only one other ice cream shop running, on the UWS; hopefully this comes to pass. It is in the middle of the block between Watts and Desbrosses, just north of…

Coffee Project New York, which has the corner space at Desbrosses where Fika used to be. When I got in touch with them in early August they said they would be open by the end of the year, but they could not share any other details. The company has seven other locations around the city; the menu includes sandwiches and pastries and all the milk options, including a Deconstructed Latte with oat milk.
