Joe & The Juice is closing tomorrow
Joe & The Juice, the Danish coffee chain that opened here in 2018, is closing tomorrow, Friday, July 31. D. sent word earlier this week — she and her kids love their sandwiches — and I confirmed with the staff yesterday. No word from corporate after a couple emails…
Joe & The Juice took what was the northern half of Gee Whiz Diner at 295 Greenwich between Chambers and Warren. The chain started in 2002 with a single store in Copenhagen, was bought out by a private equity firm in 2012 and started a global expansion. There are now more than 500 outposts worldwide including 23 in the city, with two in Fidi and one in Soho.
In 2016, Gee Whiz, faced with an increase in rent and wages, cut off part of itself in order to survive. The longtime Tribeca staple first suffered the death of its founder, Peter Panayoitou, from covid, then closed altogether in spring 2025.
So now that space is fully empty.
The building was built in 1987, so Gee Whiz was its primary tenant on the southern corner nearly its entire life.

Not directly connected, but the way the construction crews have set up the barriers for the water pipe excavation and repairs on that PS 234 block is now quite dangerous at night. On the school side of the street, pedestrians must now either walk a very narrow sidewalk or take the route in front of the school. Both are dark, and homeless/mentally unwell people sit in the front of the school area. At the very least, we need more lighting if this is going to be the set up for years.
