Pixel Academy‘s new Tribeca location, at the corner of West and Laight, is a space for kids age 7 to 12 to tinker. There are three stations: Designers (for virtual reality, 3-D animation, and digital arts); Developers (coding, game development, Minecraft programming); and Makers (Laser Cut, 3-D printing, electronics, stop-motion animation). After signing up for an annual membership, you partake in project-based Designers or Developers series, which meet once a week for six weeks. “The usual track is that you start with a series to get inspiration,” explains chief communication officer Noah Berg, “and then you take that to the Makers space,” which is sort of like independent study. Each of the stations has an instructor and no more that eight students at a time. “Our goal is to help kids identify what they enjoy, and then use the principals they learn here in A.P. computer science,” says Berg. The Pixel Academy also hosts special events such as birthday parties, and there will be a summer camp.
