New Kid on the Block: Common Point

“Our goal is to make integrative health more understandable and more accessible,” says Liz Carlson, co-founder of Common Point, a new acupuncture practice on Jay Street. “We take a modern approach: We explain everything we’re doing, we prescribe lifestyle programs, too, and we’ve lowered the cost.” At many acupuncture practices, the first visit can cost $200 or higher. At Common Point, a full diagnostic review, or Deep Dive, is $130. “But if you’re just looking for pain relief and you don’t want to talk about your digestive system for 20 minutes, you can come in for $65.”

Carlson has been an acupuncturist for 11 years, with a focus on women’s health. In 2011, she left Clarity Point Healthcare, her established practice in the Flatiron District, to try something new in San Francisco. That’s where she met her current business partners, and together they built a company that implements onsite healthcare for businesses. Now they’re moving on to acupuncture: “Our greatest intention is to be the One Medical of acupuncture,” says Carlson. “We’re going to open a ton of clinics in the U.S., and this is the first step.”

Common Point currently has two practitioners and seven treatment rooms (three large, four small) in the 1,000-square-foot space. Pain relief and fertility are the two main reasons people turn to acupuncture, but Carlson says there are others. “We really get the stuff between self-diagnosis and a doctor’s visit,” she says, mentioning migraines, hormonal imbalances, smoking cessation, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. For a Deep Dive, “We’ll talk about your diet, digestion, stress, immune system, pain you’re experiencing elsewhere, whether you sit all day, and so on. Then we’ll come up with a Chinese medical diagnosis, along with a program of the proper acupuncture and herbs.” Another option, if you’d like to get your system back on track, is the Reset ($249), a three-session package that’s Common Point’s version of a cleanse.

Common Point is at 3 Jay (bet. Hudson and Staple); 212-233-4301; commonpoint.care.

  1. Congratulations Liz. I wish you all the best. Love Helen

  2. Does Common Point accept insurance?

  3. I was lucky to have Liz recommended to me by several Hudson River Park Mamas! I never tried acupuncture until last month when physical therapy and injections weren’t enough to handle my sciatica pain and limited mobility. She completely puts me at ease and I actually look forward to appointments. It’s always a positive experience and I feel better afterwards! Common Point is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
