New Kid on the Block: Saluggi’s Sandwich Shoppe

Saluggi’s Sandwich Shoppe has opened in the old Sea World space, at the northeast corner of Church and Lispenard. It’s tiny and bare bones—there’s not much decor beyond a handful of tables and a large neon sign—but the staff is friendly and outgoing.

The menu, posted below, is also totally straightforward: bagels and breakfast sandwiches; burgers and hot dogs; hot and cold deli sandwiches; tossed-salad bar and soups. I ordered the filling Sputnik Melt (a turkey reuben); sandwiches come with waffle fries (which normally don’t excite me but these were pretty good). I know people who quite like the subs at Saluggi’s proper, but the ones at the Shoppe are all-American, the kind made with Boar’s Head and available at diners and delis around New York. The restaurant is sure to be useful to those who work in 33 Sixth Ave. Currently, it closes at 6 p.m., but it may soon stay open as late as 10 p.m.

Saluggi’s Sandwich Shoppe is at 321 Church (at Lispenard), 212-775-1175; saluggissandwichshoppe.com.
