In the News: School Zoning

I was unable to attend Wednesday’s meeting, which ended without resolution (which I’m assuming you already know if you care). Photographer Asha Agnish was there for much of the meeting, and she took these photos. “The contingent in support of 3R wore black and brought balloons while the contingent in support of 2 wore red,” […]

This Weekend’s Movies

Youth in Revolt • Fish Tank • The Last Station • The Book of Eli • Police, Adjective • Plus a bunch of interesting oldies, including Showgirls, Muppets Take Manhattan (sing-along!), a crazy 1977 Japanese cult flick called House, and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.

The Docs Are In

"You know good work when you see it," said Tribeca Film Festival executive director Nancy Schafer when I asked how her team went about choosing documentaries for its new series, Tribeca Cinemas Presents: Doc Series. "You know engaging stories when you see them."

Love It or Hate It?

I’m of two minds of Warren 77‘s new winter vestibule. On one hand, it’s more faux rusticity for a storefront that already has enough (see the beat-up red-arrow “Bar” sign”), and while I appreciate the style of the thing, I’m sure there are folks on the block who don’t love the idea of a corrugated-metal […] / 23 comments

Big Sales Right Now

You don’t have to spend much time walking around to see that a lot of stores are having sales—in just a couple square blocks I found deep discounts at Room (sale ends Saturday, when the store moves north), A Uno, Pomme, Koh’s Kids, Shoofly, Babylicious, PB & Caviar, and Nili Lotan. A few things that caught […]

Damon Dash’s Non-Wack World

The New York Observer got inside Damon Dash’s place at 172 Duane, and the story is sure to cause a stink among his neighbors—or maybe that’s just the skunky smell of pot. “You can spend hours at 172 Duane Street, in Tribeca, and still have no clue what’s going on here,” writes David Levine. “People […]
