Three friends—Michael, Abdul, and Kenneth—with experience working at various bars in the neighborhood decided to open their own place in 2009. The room is high-ceilinged with brick walls; to the front there’s lounge seating, while in the back are restaurant tables (and the bar is in the middle). Ward III is predominantly a bar—specializing in “bespoke” cocktails (where you don’t order so much as give the bartender an idea of what you want, although you can simply order, too)—but there’s a nice little menu of “good tavern food,” in one bartender’s words. The bar can be a bit of a post-work scrum late in the week, and on Mondays, whiskey devotees take over. NOTE: Ward II is closed till fall as the building undergoes renovations.
