••• Shinola is celebrating its grand opening a block party at 177 Franklin on Sept. 14 (noon to 4 p.m.) and everyone is invited. “Bring your friends and family as we mark the occasion with food an entertainment from Detroit and New York—including Slows BBQ, popcorn by Eatpreneur, and ice cream by Van Leeuwen. Special guest performances by Sleepy Man Banjo Boys, DJ Roctakon, DJ Austin Peters, and Detroit-based garage band the Dirtbombs.”
••• Tablao, the Spanish restaurant where Flor de Sol was, is in the hiring phase. But then I also saw this on Craigslist: Is there a non-profit café component? Is Laughing Man just happening to be doing a casting call at the same time?
••• Construction kitten update from foster dad Jared: “Kaia (now Cosmo) and Marco are with Bruce Martin; Sinjin (now Hudson) and Kula (now Chambers) with Stephen and Mary Jo Pile; and Octavia and Pipa are with Rigel Leonard. Sadly, the eighth kitten—the one that went home with one of the construction workers—is missing. She had named it Trench.”
••• Brandy Library is opening a bar, Copper and Oak, on the Lower East Side. There’s a petition for an upcoming community board meeting. (Neither the petition nor the bar’s email about it includes the address.)
••• Milo Hess points out that the International Center of Photography’s “Rising Waters: Photographs of Hurricane Sandy” show on Governors Island (through Sept. 29) is a must: “Honored to say one of my photographs is in the exhibit. It’s a worthwhile show to see… regardless of if I was in it or not.”

••• This Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at DeRose Method Tribeca: A show of photos by Element 6 artist Robin Rice. “Whether capturing the innate beauty of South American landscapes or reflective moments of unknowing subjects, her photography is always candid and evocative of classic and foreign film.”
••• Remember, tomorrow is Sept. 11, so the Tribute in Light will be blazing (you may have seen them tested in recent nights). Do check out the two photo essays by Krystl Hall on the set up: Prepare the Space Cannons! and Inside Tribute in Light. They really are marvelous.
