“In New York City’s design landscape, there’s a lot of space for bigger, more established brands,” says Colony co-founder Jean Lin. “But there aren’t a lot of places for designers at this level. The idea is to come together, to have a space in the city to show their work—not just to architects and interior designers, but to their clients.”
Don’t let the Canal Street location (in a second floor walk-up) or the squalid entrance fool you: Colony fits nicely in northeast Tribeca’s design district—Steven Sclaroff, Stillfried Wien, Ted Muehling, David Weeks Studio, Patrick Parrish, R & Company—offering the kind of stuff stylish Tribecans would want in their home.
“It’s a gallery but set up like a co-op,” says Lin. The thirteen independent American designers include Allied Maker (lighting), Assembly (furniture and objects), Egg Collective (furniture and art), Flat Vernacular (wallpaper), Hiroko Takeda (textiles), KWH Furniture, Meg Callahan (quilts), Sharktooth (textiles), Sit and Read (furniture), Token (furniture), Um Project (furniture), and Zoë Mowat (furniture and objects). “You might find a piece here and there in the city, but this is each designer’s main location.”
Colony is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but you should email jean@goodcolony.com in advance to make sure someone will be there and able to help you. And be sure to check out the small exhibit of highly covetable objects used to make some of the products on the floor.
Colony is at 324 Canal (between Church and Broadway), 2nd floor; goodcolony.com.
