New Kid on the Block: Ibiza

Ibiza12In 1976, Chrystyna Hordijenko and John Husiak quit their jobs as a social worker and teacher, respectively, to go into the fashion business. Part of the appeal was that they’d get to travel; when they founded Ibiza, the line was, in fact, from the Spanish island. Nearly forty years later, much of the clothing, accessories, and jewelry is by designers from all over Europe and beyond, but it’s unified by an independent, bohemian style.

Ibiza spent 33 years on University Place, then six on Broadway. “Our experience on Broadway was disappointing,” says Hordijenko. “We looked everywhere: Upper East Side, Upper West Side, the Meatpacking District, the East Village, the West Village…. But we’re downtown people. So we came farther downtown.” Specifically, to a former allergist’s office on Duane. “We really liked that people take care of their storefronts.”

The boutique is still settling into its new space, with more merchandise to make its way out in the coming weeks. And while Ibiza carries many different brands now, Hordijenko is hoping to grow the original line. “There is still a small Ibiza collection,” she says, “and we do in-house sewing downstairs.”

Ibiza is at 147 Duane (between W. Broadway and Church), 212-533-4614; ibizanyc.com.
