New Kid on the Block: Equinox at Brookfield Place

Equinox Brookfield Place front deskThe new Equinox at Brookfield Place, which you enter on the same level as Hudson Eats, feels big—around 35,000 square feet. But more than that, it feels long. The main floor—up a striking staircase—is so long, in fact, that it has views east overlooking the World Trade Center and west toward North Cove Marina and the Hudson River.

This gym is more stylish than the Tribeca one. Besides the strength and cardio areas, there is a huge main group fitness studio, along with dedicated studios for cycling, yoga, and boxing. The 40-bike cycling studio is for Equinox’s new cycling program, the Pursuit by Equinox—”an immersive studio cycling experience that uses groundbreaking in-studio gaming and data visualization to drive competition and inspire peak performance,” according to the website.

The locker room, stocked with Kiehl’s products, wouldn’t look out of place at a Four Seasons hotel; it’s enough to make the patron of a community center cry. Just as well, then, that I didn’t see the “men’s executive locker room,” which I understand is sort of a mancave/lounge. And the gym also has a spa offering massages, an outpost of Professional Physical Therapy, a Kids’ Club, two lounge areas (with a couple of iMacs—and the facility has free wi-fi throughout), and a shop. The food counter, meanwhile, marks the debut of Equinox’s new food concept—it sells premade items from Ellary’s Greens, juices from Pressed Juicery, and more. You don’t have to be a member to access the spa, physical therapy, shop, and food counter.

If you have an Equinox All-Access membership, you may use the gym. If not, I’m sure they’d love to show you around.

Equinox is at Brookfield Place, 225 Liberty Place, 646-630-7573; equinox.com.
