Newsletter: Feb. 12

Just so you know, I update TribecaCitizen.com daily, more or less, and all the links in these twice-weekly newsletters go back to the site. (I see the newsletter as an easy way to keep up with TribecaCitizen.com, for those of you who don’t want to bother checking it all the time or deal with RSS feeds.) The newsletter covers about 90 percent of what’s on the site—I drop anything that would be out of date by the time the newsletter is published, such as this recent Groupon deal.

One of the perks of this endeavor is that I sometimes get inside places that I’d never otherwise be allowed to see. Case in point: Pier A, the old overwater building just west of Battery Park. It was amazing! Click here for photos of the first floor, here for photos of the second floor, and here for photos of the clock tower. The Landmarks Preservation Committee will decide this week whether the necessary exterior work can be done.

THIS WEEKEND
••• What’s playing in local theaters.
••• Poets House is screening The Red Balloon on Saturday, and then showing kids how to make their own “poetic floating Valentines.” P.S. A reader sent in this amusing sequel to The Red Balloon.
••• Valentine’s Day is Sunday. I got such a kick out of Tribeca Treats’ funny (and delicious!) anti-Valentine’s Day cookies that I left two (“Go Solo” and “Eat It”) as a gag gift for my partner, because he went to L.A. for a too-long business trip—but I felt so terrible for how he looked when he read them that I went back and bought a nice one (“P.Y.T.”). Actually, I bought two and ate one.
••• Chambers Pottery’s Kyle Lee shows his stuff at Kiva Cafe.
••• R 20th Century presents an exhibit of work by Swedish designer and architect Greta Magnusson Grossman.

HUNGRY YET?
••• A full plate of restaurant news, including a glimpse into the plans (and opening date) for Sarabeth’s, a rumor about Capri Caffé, what’s going into the Greenwich Steak & Burger space, Tamarind Tribeca’s signage, and a near-death experience at Fraunces Tavern.
••• I finally made it to By the Ounce, the wine bar that pops up inside Bouley Bakery at 6 p.m. The verdict?

••• Choreographer Jody Sperling and her company, Time Lapse Dance, are coming to the Tribeca Performing Arts Center February 19–21, for their 10th anniversary celebration, and it looks like it’s going to be quite a beautiful show—check out these stills. And here’s how to get $4 off.
••• The Battery Park City Ice Rink will have extended hours next week.

GOOGLE IS WEIRD, PART 17
The epicenter of New York City, at least according to Google Maps, isn’t where you think.

••• Battery Park City Authority chairman James Gill resigned unexpectedly.
••• A profile of Trinity Real Estate’s Jason Pizer, “Rector of Hudson Square.”
••• The Walker’s buildings were sold.
••• Renderings of BPC’s under-construction Liberty twins (nice pool!).
••• A semi-Tribecan’s 100% cute film about subway emergency brakes.
••• Progress at the 9/11 Memorial.
••• The New York Times reviews Edon Manor.

PHEW
One of the odder façades around is getting some work done.
