July 28, 2014 Restaurant/Bar News
A few weeks back, I noticed that a handsome Greek bakery was opening on Broome—more or less across from Oliver Peoples, and next to the hideous yellow Subway restaurant. The other day, I walked by it again, and it was open.
This is the first Pi Bakerie, I learned from the staffer, but the owner has another bakery (Artopolis) in Astoria. Pi really is good-looking, with a wall of south-facing windows and copper trays converted into tables. Not knowing much about Greek baked goods, I put my lunch in the staffer’s hands, and I ended up with the Greek salad and a spinach-and-feta pastry. Both were excellent, and there are meat pies for carnivores. Next time, I might try the leek pie or the made-to-order sandwiches—the cucumber-and-yogurt one sounded especially refreshing on a hot day—and I will have the watermelon cubes dotted with creamy feta. Unless I make it up there for breakfast, in which case there’s the fresh Greek yogurt with various topping options….
Obviously, Pi sells baklava, and I bought minis in traditional, almond, and chocolate. Baklava is a bit sweet for me, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy them. The chocolate chip cookies were less successful. Pi also has many other baked goods, including some labeled as vegan (although one has honey, so I’m not sure how that works).
All in all, a hugely welcome addition to a part of town without a lot of good casual dining options.
Pi Bakerie is at 512 Broome (between Thompson and W. Broadway), 212-226-2701; pibakerie.com.
