July Highlights

SUGGESTION BOX: WHOLE FOODS RESPONDS
I posted an item asking everyone for constructive ways on how Whole Foods Tribeca could improve. Last week, I emailed over the suggestions. The manager has responded….

TINY STREETS: PART 1, PART 2, PART 3
Asha Agnish photographed the tiny streets in and around Tribeca—the streets only locals know.

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS A FREE SNACK
All you have to do is send a text message to MaxDelivery between noon and 5 or 6 p.m., and they’ll send over a free snack.

DEFACING TRIBECA
A photo essay of the street-art faces I’ve spotted around the neighborhood during the past few months.

A PIECE OF TRIBECA®
Businesses around the world—restaurants, nightclubs, investment firms, interior designers, salons, boutiques—are naming themselves after our neighborhood. Why?

THE TCQ&A
••• Shelly Mossey: “Adeline Adeline Is Like a Candy Store for Me”
••• Ariel Porath (right): “Who’s Behind Rod Stuart Loves the Hamptons?”
••• Matt Lundquist: “I Love How Empty the Streets Are”

WICKIWORLD
What’s been up in Wickham Boyle’s world….
••• A tribute to Merce Cunningham
••• Horseflesh and manflesh on Varick
••• The Wooly, the new hotspot in the Woolworth Building
••• Tickling the ivories

CB1 TRIBECA COMMITTEE: THE UNOFFICIAL MINUTES
The CB1 Tribeca committee discussed the proposed temporary Hudson Street plaza; noise complaints about Warren 77; permits for Blaue Gans and Estancia 460; two block parties; and more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: BOULEY STUDIO
I was out of town, so I wasn’t able to file a report about Bouley Studio. Handily, readers wrote in and even sent photos.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: NIRVANA INTERNATIONAL
Amit Sharma has opened Nirvana International, a gallery of fine art and fine jewelry, on West Broadway. “It’s been so great here!” he says. “Interesting people walk in, and they understand art.”

TOO MANY CHEFS? NO SUCH THING
“Part potluck and part cooking class,” the Community Cooking Club has just launched at the Bruce High Quality Foundation University. Alicia Kachmar interviewed founder Tracy Candido about how she’s combining food and art.

TRIBECA EN PLEIN AIR
Diane Hardy Waller, one of the 24 artists in the Art Students League class that recently spent two days painting in and around Duane Park, was kind enough to send over examples of the fruits of their labor.

STROLLER BOOT CAMP
At Mind Over Matter’s “Stroller Boot Camp,” new mothers incorporate their babies into the workout. Rebecca Sadek audited a class.

GWYNETH AND CHRIS’S PLACE
Curbed uncovered photos of the River Lofts apartment owned by Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin.

INSIDE BOGARDUS MANSION
I went and checked out Bogardus Mansion, the event space at 75 Murray that was recently mentioned in the Daily News. Come fall, it’ll also be an art gallery—and more.

HERE COMES BIRDBATH
Tribeca’s bakery explosion continues: We’re getting a Birdbath bakery—and it’ll have more packaged-to-go food and City Bakery’s famous hot chocolate.

“THIS MESS” AT PELAVIN GALLERY
I quite enjoyed Pelavin Gallery’s new group show, “This Mess We’re In: Reflections on the Metropolis”—especially the Molotov cocktail, and even the rat flower—so I emailed a few questions over to Todd Masters, Pelavin’s new director and co-owner.

REFLECTIONS ON THE CITY
I’ve been enchanted by the patterns created when light bounces off one building and onto another. They remind me how much magic is left to be discovered in this city, even if you’ve lived here a while.

SIGNS AMONG US
“I found these signs in and around Tribeca within a few short hours,” wrote photographer Barry Fidnick. “Most often, the signs themselves were not remarkable, but upon a closer look, many became thought-provoking.”

BREEZY LISTENING
Photographer Asha Agnish shot the audiences (ouch!) at various River to River Festival concerts: “Castle Clinton, South Street Seaport, Rockefeller Park, Wagner Park—each offers a different blend of music, food, water views, and people-watching.”

CSA CHRONICLES: TOMATOPALOOZA
The latest in Jolene Howard’s series: The box of CSA goodies included all the makings for Confetti Salad, a delicious—and versatile—salad that’s especially refreshing during the dog days of summer. (Plus: no cooking required.)
