What’s happening to the uptown entrance at the Franklin Street 1 train station? The sign says the work will take six months. —D.
As you may have noticed, the uptown entrance of the Franklin Street 1 train station and most of the surrounding plaza have been fenced off. “The stairs are being repaired,” said a rep for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. “The work includes tile replacement, new concrete at the stair landing, tread and riser replacements, new handrails, new drains for flood mitigation, and scraping/repainting the ceiling area.” Somewhat confusingly, the signs posted at the site say “Please use the adjacent stairway along Franklin St,” but there is no other entrance to the uptown platform. That evidently refers to the other half of the one stairway. Indeed, said the rep: “I believe the plan is to keep half the stairway open during the work to allow egress. So one side will be open for three months, then the work will move to the other side for another three months.”
