Nosy Neighbor: What’s Happening in the Old Aloha Rag Space?

There’s a black curtain in the window of 505 Greenwich, where the Aloha Rag store was, and the “for rent” signs are gone. Is something moving in? —N.

It’s a private gym, J Train, that moved from the West Village. I emailed founder Joe Maysonet, a.k.a. Joe Trainer (that’s him pictured below), to ask if he planned to take down the curtain and/or put up a sign. He includes info on the facility and its ethos:

We are a body-transformation center, offering all services necessary for our clients to achieve their health and wellness goals, a one-stop shop, if you will. Our method is total customization to the individual, from specific training regimens and nutrition plans to on-site massage and acupuncture. We are here to service the community! Our last location was at 451 Bank St., by the West Side Highway, and I have been training in the community for many years.

To answer your questions, yes we plan do to both of those things. Currently we are partially open while we complete build-out, and will have our grand opening in September—at which time we will have a display on the window as well as our JTRAIN sign in the door.

JTRAIN’s design style is deeply rooted in the art of the community—having many local artists such as Will Cotton, Adam McEwen, and more, designing pieces for our space, with plans to follow the same style for our window display.

Sounds interesting! And Cotton and McEwen are only a few of the boldface names J Train counts as clients. The website also includes testimonials from actors Matthew Broderick, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Taylor Schilling, John Slattery, Leelee Sobieski, Natasha Lyonne, and many others.
